WHAT A BUNCH OF CRAP!!!!!! part 2
Scoring only one goal in games 5, 6, and 7 the Avalanche melted losing the first round of playoffs. Joe scored two game winners in the first four games including a spectacular short-handed goal to win game 3 in OT!!!!
Keep in touch for off-season news. Including discussions about the 4 first round picks that the Avs have in the draft.

WHAT A BUNCH OF CRAP!!!!!! Joe Sakic will be forced to sit out Game #1 against the Edmonton Oilers Wednesday for a kneeing incident against Kris Draper that occured the final regular season game.
Joeless Avs will lose some power
Joe returns for the Friday game and the Oilers better watch out!!!!
April 20, 1998
The first season is over LET THE GAMES BEGIN! Joe finished the regular season in Joe fashion finshing the season with 63 points (27-36). He lead the team in both goals and power play goals despite missing 18 games. Leaguewide, Joe finished out of the top 25 scorers by 4 points. But, he did tie for 9th in power play goals 4 behind LeClair and Palffy and 8th in first goals.
The avalanche ended the season on a marvelous note beating the hated Red Wings 5 - 4. As much as they tried to give the game to an undermanned Red Wing squad (minus Yzerman and Shanahan) a Peter Forsberg goal with 40 seconds remaining secured the victory!!
The Avalanche (95 points) finish the season with the fourth best record in the West behind Dallas (109), Detroit (103), and St. Louis (98) and tied Philadelphia (95) for 7th best record in the entire league with New Jersey (107) at #2 and Pittsburgh (98) tied for #4.
The playoffs begin Wednesday in Denver as the avalanche face the team they knocked out of the second round last year, the Edmonton Oilers. Colorado is 5 - 1 against the Oilers this season but lost their last meeting 5 - 4 in overtime.

Another apology for the lapse in Sakic headlines. Most importantly JOE'S BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In his first two games back, Joe has scored two goals one on the power play (to bring his total to 12 - just 3 behind the league lead). Joe's hiatus has dropped him out of the top 25 in scoring but only trials #25 by 3 points.
The avalanche have struggled a lot recently. They have lost 5 in a row!!!! First time since they were Nordiques and are 1-6-0 over their last 7 games!!!!! arrrggghhh (again). If the Avs hadn't been without Sakic for 18 games and now Forsberg is day to day with a nagging injury. They play Los Angeles again on Saturday. There are only 5 games left!
In the meantime, Coach Crawford has given the team a few days off. see the canoe article:
The Avalanche (90 points) have the fifth best record in the league trailing New Jersey (101), Dallas (99), Detroit (99), and Pittsburgh (91). If the playoffs started today, the avs would play Phoenix in the first round

My apologies for the lapse in Sakic headlines. I am just know getting over the injury Joe suffered in the Olympics. I hope he does as well!!! Before the Olympic break, had 57 points a little under one point per game. He still leads the avs in goals, power play goals, and total shots.
The avalanche have struggled a bit recently. They are 3-4-0 over their last 7 games losing to the blackhawks, the oilers in OT, the Senators and the LIGHTNING at HOME!!!!! arrrggghhh. Before that though, the Avs had a 5 game win streak. Since the all-star break and without their captain, the Avalanche are 5-4-0. They play a hot Los Angeles team on Saturday. There are only 15 games left!
The avalanche (84 points) have the third best record in the league trailing both New Jersey (89) and Dallas (86). If the playoffs started today, the avs would play the Oilers in the first round!
See these headlines at CANOE
Crawford Unrepentant - Coach Crawford actually thought about dressing an injured Sakic for the Olympic shoot-out team.

January 27, 1998
Seems like a long time since the Avalanche's 10 game unbeaten streak!!! It has not been an easy week for the Avs. Their OT win last night over Edmonton (who they are 9-0-1 over in their last ten meetings) ended a three game losing streak!! ARGH!! They have fallen to fourth in the NHL with 64 points 4 behind Detroit and 2 behind New Jersey.
Joe had a power play goal in a loss to Anaheim and an assist in Colorado's FIRST loss to Dallas this week!
Sakic is tied for 6th in the league in scoring behind Jagr (60), Forsberg (59), Lindros (56), LeClair (56), and Selanne(56). He is tied with Bure (29-25-54).

It's all-star break and time to look back on the first half of the season.
Team - The Colorado Avalanche are 24-9-16. Their 9 loses are the lowest in the league and their 16 ties is 4 more than the closest team the New York Rangers. The Avalanche have scored 146 goals and given up only 116. They are 1st in the Pacific Division by 16 points; third in the Western Conference behind Dallas and Detroit and Third overall in the NHL. They are playing well enough to win games (or at least tie them) but haven't shown the spark that says we are the team to beat for the Stanley Cup. When they show that spark, watch out!!!! Plus, it's not bad when Barry Melrose says he loves the Avalanche on NHL2night.
Scoring - Sakic currently is 6th in the league in scoring behind Forsberg (59), Jagr (54), Lindros (56), LeClair (55), and Bure (53). He has 22 goals and 30 assists for 52 points in 49 games [That's 1.06 points/game]. Joe's 22 goals leads the Avalanche team and is tied for 6th in the league. 10 of his 22 goals have been on the power play tying him for second in the league behind Shayne Corson and tied with Brendan Shanahan. Joe is currently second in the league in total shots (190) two behind Bure. Joe has had 2 game winners and 1 game tying goal.
