DOSAGE CALCULATION POLICY

Students are required to demonstrate 100% accuracy in medication dosage calculation.  Computer generated ten-item math exams will be given during the first two weeks of the semester.  Times and places for administration of the exams will be posted the first day of the semester.  Students who achieve less than 100% accuracy on their first exam will retake the exam until 100% accuracy is achieved.  Repeat exams will consist of ten similar problems taken from a computerized test pool.  Students will continue this process until 100% accuracy is demonstrated.  Students are required to demonstrate 100% accuracy on this exam by the deadline specified on their course calendar.  Students who do not achieve 100% accuracy by this deadline will be counseled and referred for math remediation.

Students may not administer medications in the clinical setting until they have satisfied this requirement.  Administration of medications is a critical skill in NUR863 and failure to demonstrate 100% accuracy by midterm will result in failure of the course.  Med math competency will be evaluated on written exams, pretests and clinical exercises.  Students must show their math for all med math questions.  Answers may be verified by use of a basic four-function calculator only.  Under no circumstances will programmable calculators or sharing of calculators be allowed.  Students who miss 3 or more math problems on lab tests will be required to attend math remediation.
