Research Projects Draw Substantial Funding

A wide array of high quality research is currently underway within the Department of Communication. A recent survey by the National Communication Association Photo of research subjectsrated the Department as the most highly funded Communication program in the country, with more than $35 million dollars of extramural funding secured in the past 15 years. While most of this grant-funded research is focused on health-related communication, a variety of other areas draw the attention of our faculty, including studies of interpersonal and small group communication in organizational, instructional and computer-mediated contexts.

For more information on these research initiatives, or to see a list of current research projects, see Studies.

Innovative Media Center for the Future Houses Communication Research Laboratory

Visit the lower level of the Grehan Building and you can check out the recently expanded Media Center for the Future, which offers resources for both students and faculty members. Operated by the College of Communications and Information Studies, the Media Center provides facilities for research as well as instruction and media production. The Center is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and is designed to be a "changeable and adaptable" multipurpose facility.

The facility houses the Multimedia Communication Research Laboratory where faculty and graduate students produce and test media-based messages. The lab includes a 20-seat theater, wired to collect heart rate, electromyographic response, and skin conductance response from research subjects as well as a focus group room equipped for recording discussions and interviews. Other parts of the Media Center include an audio recording studio, digital content analysis lab, several video editing suites, a media production room, and two classroom computer labs.
