Research Studies

A variety of areas draw the attention of our research faculty, including studies of interpersonal and small group communication in organizational, instructional, health and computer-mediated contexts. Individual studies range from an examination of the social construction of gender within the Greek System to an evaluation of technology innovation in professional development of mathematics teachers.

Highlights of Studies in Progress

Dr. Alan DeSantis, associate professor, is examining the creation of pro-smoking arguments by at-risk cigar users that rebuke the medical establishment's anti-smoking health claims. He is also working on a book about the social construction of gender within the Greek System, examining the ways their rites and rituals both reinforce and challenge traditional notions of masculinity and femininity.

Dr. Lewis Donohew, professor emeritus, is principal investigator of a grant-funded study examining the persuasive message strategies for prevention campaigns within the context of theories of information exposure and information processing.

Dr. Nancy Harrington, associate professor and department chair, is principal investigator on a project to investigate persuasive message strategies for effective anti-drug messages. She also serves as principal evaluator to investigate the effectiveness of a community-based adolescent character education and problem behavior prevention program, while serving as co-investigator along with Rick Zimmerman, Derek Lane, and Tom Kelly on a research grant headed by Lewis Donohew to investigate the persuasive message strategies for prevention campaigns within the context of theories of information exposure and information processing.

Dr. Derek Lane, associate professor, is principal evaluator on a U.S. Department of Education Technology Innovation Challenge Grant to partner modern technology with teacher professional development activities designed to empower teachers with technology capabilities that will enhance student achievement, curriculum integration, and teacher professional development standards in the field of mathematics. He also serves as co-investigator along with Rick Zimmerman, Nancy Harrington, and Tom Kelly on a research grant headed by Lewis Donohew to investigate the persuasive message strategies for prevention campaigns within the context of theories of information exposure and information processing.

Dr. Philip Palmgreen, professor, serves as principal investigator to study the effectiveness of anti-marijuana and anti-inhalant campaign flights aimed at adolescents as part of the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign. He also serves as co-principal investigator of a study focusing on the ability of television campaigns to increase awareness of sexually transmitted diseases.

Dr. Rick Zimmerman, associate professor, is the principal investigator or co-investigator on 16 sponsored research projects, including an NIMH-funded study of peer intervention and sexual risk taking in the prevention of HIV transmission in Ethiopia. He also serves as evaluator on five other studies.
