Dr.
Alan DeSantis, associate professor,
is examining the creation of pro-smoking
arguments by at-risk cigar users that rebuke
the medical establishment's anti-smoking
health claims. He is also working on a book
about the social construction of gender
within the Greek System, examining the ways
their rites and rituals both reinforce and
challenge traditional notions of masculinity
and femininity.
Dr.
Lewis Donohew,
professor emeritus, is principal investigator
of a grant-funded study examining the persuasive
message strategies for prevention campaigns
within the context of theories of information
exposure and information processing.
Dr.
Nancy Harrington, associate professor
and department chair, is principal investigator
on a project to investigate persuasive message
strategies for effective anti-drug messages.
She also serves as principal evaluator to
investigate the effectiveness of a community-based
adolescent character education and problem
behavior prevention program, while serving
as co-investigator along with Rick Zimmerman,
Derek Lane, and Tom Kelly on a research
grant headed by Lewis Donohew to investigate
the persuasive message strategies for prevention
campaigns within the context of theories
of information exposure and information
processing.
Dr.
Derek Lane, associate professor, is
principal evaluator on a U.S. Department
of Education Technology Innovation Challenge
Grant to partner modern technology with
teacher professional development activities
designed to empower teachers with technology
capabilities that will enhance student achievement,
curriculum integration, and teacher professional
development standards in the field of mathematics.
He also serves as co-investigator along
with Rick Zimmerman, Nancy Harrington, and
Tom Kelly on a research grant headed by
Lewis Donohew to investigate the persuasive
message strategies for prevention campaigns
within the context of theories of information
exposure and information processing.
Dr.
Philip Palmgreen, professor, serves
as principal investigator to study the effectiveness
of anti-marijuana and anti-inhalant campaign
flights aimed at adolescents as part of
the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign.
He also serves as co-principal investigator
of a study focusing on the ability of television
campaigns to increase awareness of sexually
transmitted diseases.
Dr.
Rick Zimmerman, associate professor,
is the principal investigator or co-investigator
on 16 sponsored research projects, including
an NIMH-funded study of peer intervention
and sexual risk taking in the prevention
of HIV transmission in Ethiopia. He also
serves as evaluator on five other studies.
