Key Questions to Consider During Academic Job Interviews

  • What is the expected Distribution of Effort (DOE) or breakdown between teaching, research, and service?
  • What is the expected teaching load (different preps, required, electives)?
  • How would current faculty describe the Annual Review Process?
  • How is teaching evaluated (e.g., course, peer, portfolio)?
  • How are other faculty evaluated?
  • How would the Dean/Department Chair/Director of School/ explain the Promotion and Tenure (P&T) process?
  • How many years are on the tenure clock?
  • When was the last time someone in the department/unit was tenured?
  • How many publications are expected per year for a successful tenure case?
  • Does developing new courses "count" in the tenure process?
  • Does textbook authorship "count" in the tenure process?
  • How much support is provided for Professional Development (e.g., travel)?
  • Are summer research grants or summer teaching opportunities available?
  • How would current faculty describe the support available for Grants and Contracts?
  • To what extent are interdisciplinary studies emphasized?
  • How important is new technology in curriculum implementation?
  • How would current faculty describe the ideal colleague?
  • Compared to other departments, how would current faculty describe the benefits package available (e.g., medical, dental, life insurance, retirement)?
  • Are moving expenses available?
  • What resources are available for start-up (e.g., desktop computer, laptop, furniture, office supplies, research technology, etc.)?

Prepare for the interview so you can demonstrate that you are already a member of the department!
