Graduate School Time Limits

DOCTORAL PRE-Qualifiying Exam Time Limits  

Students first enrolled in a doctoral program in the fall 2005 semester and beyond:

• must take the qualifying examination within five years of entry into the program
• may request an extension of up to an additional three years
• < 12 month extension considered by Dean of the Graduate School
• > 12 month extension considered by Graduate Council
dismissal if the qualifying examination has not been passed at the end of five years, or at the end of all approved time extensions

DOCTORAL POST-Qualifiying Exam Time Limits  

Students first enrolled in a doctoral program in the fall 2005 semester and beyond:

• must complete all requirements for the degree within five years of passing the qualifying examination
• may request an extension of up to an additional five years
• < 12 month extension considered by Dean of the Graduate School
• > 12 month extension considered by Graduate Council
dismissal if all requirements have not been met at the end of all approved time extensions

MASTER'S Time Limits  

Students first enrolled in a master's program in the fall 2005 semester and beyond:

• must complete all requirements for the degree within six years of entry into the program
• may request an extension of up to an additional four years
• < 24 month extension considered by Dean of the Graduate School
• >24 month extension considered by Graduate Council

dismissal if all requirements have not been met at the end of all approved time extensions
