CHAIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS
MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY, 1992-97
Naturally, a chair does not accomplish things by themselves. The following achievements represent partnerships with other faculty members.
General Departmental
* Two endowments funded (G. R. Miller, Kumata) and another initiated (Bettinghaus)
* New Mission Statement
* New personnel policy that recognized multidimensional excellence and performance across the mission
* Implemented conversion to semester system
* Five faculty members were awarded tenure and promoted, three of them early
* Commitment to diversity:
- Committee Responsive to Issues of Harassment and Diversity created in new By-Laws
- Yearly sexual harassment workshops, especially for new teaching assistants
- Recruitment of minority and women faculty
- Every year department awarded at least one Minority Competitive Doctoral Fellowship by university
* A leader in integrating staff in departmental and university governance
* Innovative outreach partnerships with business:
- E. W. Bliss Co.
- Ameritech Certificate Program
* Innovative assessment programs:
- Teaching
- Office procedures
* Total Quality Improvement, selected as sole representative from College to attend 4 day training workshop for MSU administrators in partnership with Ford Motor Company
Teaching Reforms
* Undergraduate reforms:
- Greater curricula coherence, in-depth focus within substantive areas
- Quality substantially improved
- Smaller class sizes
- More writing experiences
- Timeliness of completion of degree enhanced
- Very active student group, undergraduate honorary program established
* Masters reforms:
- Pre-Ph.D. track
- Flexible outcome evaluations
- More competitive admissions
- Structured application process
* Ph. D. reforms:
- Only admit students with masters
- Shorter time to completion
- Renewed commitment to methods
Research
* Entrepreneurial efforts
- DASI patent
* Department ranked in Top 3 for publications in premiere journals
* Department accounted for 40 percent of college's refereed publications
* Maintained departmental ranking among top doctoral programs in the country
* Enhanced administrative support for preparing grants
* Major grants melding applied/theoretical perspectives
* Enhanced extramural funding
