For three-quarters of a century, Murray State University has served students from near and far, and now it's your turn to be served. We have grown from an enrollment of 202 students when the college was founded in 1922 to almost 9,000 today. US News consistently ranks Murray State among the leading universities in the South, and Barron's college guide lists MSU as "very competitive."

Murray State is located in western Kentucky and features five academic colleges: Business and Public Affairs; Education; Health Sciences and Human Services; Humanities and Fine Arts; and Science, Engineering and Technology, as well as a School of Agriculture. Our 236-acre main campus is in Murray, a city of 15,000 which is ranked in the national publication, "Crime at College," as Kentucky's safest college town and 11th safest in the entire nation.

Department of Journalism and Mass Communication
http://www.mursuky.edu/qacd/cfac/jmc/dept/

Areas of Study
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communications was established in the College of Fine Arts and Communication in 1975. The department offers four majors leading to a bachelor's degree: advertising, journalism (electronic or print option), public relations, and radio-television. The department also offers minors in advertising and journalism. In addition to career-oriented classes students are required to follow a liberal arts program that is designed to give them a broad educational base.

Objectives
The department has three objectives: to teach the highest standards of professional excellence to those who will become journalists and broadcasters, to offer continuing education to regional professionals, and to provide undergraduate and graduate instruction to those who plan to teach on the college or high school level.

Background
Murray State has offered journalism courses since 1927. In 1968 a full major was instituted leading to bachelor's and master's degrees. Three majors have been added since 1968. The programs are updated frequently. In 1987 the Accrediting Council for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications approved accreditation for all departmental programs. The department received re-accreditation in 1992 and 1998.

UNIVERSIDAD NACIONAL (Costa Rica)

http://www.una.ac.cr/

COVENTRY UNIVERSITY (United Kingdom)

http://www.coventry.ac.uk/

Coventry University has a long tradition as a provider of education. It can trace its roots as far back as Coventry College of Design in 1843. It was in 1970 that Coventry College of Art amalgamated with Lanchester College of Technology and Rugby College of Engineering Technology. The resulting institution was called Lanchester Polytechnic: 'Lanchester' after the Midlands automotive industry pioneer, Dr Frederick Lanchester, and 'Polytechnic' meaning 'skilled in many sciences and arts'.

Coventry University offers more than 180 courses, with more coming on stream every year in response to the changing needs of industry and society. They are taught by an academic staff of over 600. This diversity of learning opportunities attracts a good mix of students of all ages and nationalities. In 1995/96, there were nearly 15,000 students here. Many of these were mature students - because education does not stop after you reach the age of 21. And many were international students, reflecting our international approach to learning.

A busy, multicultural city, Coventry has a population of over 300,000. You will find a mixture of the traditional and modern here; Coventry was rebuilt from the ruins of the last war and attracts major commercial investment, yet traces of medieval Coventry can still be found and the City is keen to preserve what remains of its past. For example, right opposite the University is Coventry Cathedral, where ancient ruins and modern architecture dwell in harmony and where we hold our annual awards ceremony.

Coventry School of Art and Design
http://www.csad.coventry.ac.uk/

Coventry School of Art and Design continues to extend the established boundaries of the subject area at the forefront of higher education.

The School is divided into five main subject groups: Communication, Culture and Media; Industrial Design; Information Design; Performing Arts; and Visual Arts, which collectively offer a unique portfolio of courses from BTEC Diploma to MDes and MA levels.

We are proud to boast a national and, in some areas, an international reputation for our activities. Our expertise is wide-ranging and included in our numbers are practising artists, designers, leading researchers and scholars. We have our own art and design galleries, the "Lanchester and Concourse," which host regular programs of high quality exhibitions and seminars of newly established artistsĖ work.

Founded in 1843, the School has a long tradition of excellence upon which we continue to build. We currently enjoy a high rating for our research capabilities and are proud of our links with the local community and industry world-wide.

Communication, Culture and Media
The Communication, Culture and Media program explores contemporary culture and media from a variety of perspectives. There is critical analysis of film and television, study of media organizations, and production work in video and photography.

Media markets are growing rapidly and this has a knock-on effect in terms of employment. Our graduates possess knowledge that is highly prized in our information society. They also have the transferable skills of analysis and communication that can be harnessed across the whole range of professional and managerial jobs.
