Gaines Center for the Humanities

The Gaines Center for the Humanities was established in 1984 with a generous gift from Joan B. and John R. Gaines and assisted by grants from the Kentucky Heritage Council and the University of Kentucky.

The Betts House contains the CenterÌs offices, a FellowsÌ lounge, and a second-floor apartment for the student resident managers.

The Commonwealth House provides individual rooms for small groups and an open area for larger gatherings of as many as 45 people. The building also houses the CenterÌs library, full kitchen facilities for sponsored activities, and a second-floor guest apartment for visiting speakers and scholars.

The Bingham Davis House includes two upstairs study rooms designed to provide quiet work spaces and a FelowsÌ computer lab designed for multimedia productions as well as extensive word processing. A modest hall for lectures or presentations is available on the first floor, along with kitchen facilities for sponsored activities. The building also contains a residential apartment for visiting speakers and scholars.

The Gaines Center for the Humanities is located in the Betts House at 232 East Maxwell Street. The Gaines Center also includes the neighboring Bingham-Davis House and Commonwealth House.
