National Center for Education Statistics, http://nces.ed.gov, is a treasure trove of data on schools. It also offers a tool for creating simple graphics, intended for children but useful for creating charts to illustrate stories. See http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph.

Education Week, at www.edweek.org, calls itself “American education's newspaper of record” and has a relatively large reporting staff. It is published by Editorial Projects in Education, a nonnprofit, tax-exempt organization based in the Washington, D.C., area.

EducationNews.org is largely a news aggregator. Like Education Week, it is designed for educators but can be a resource on school issues.
