Alumni

Welcome back to Grehan, or at least, the virtual Grehan.

Our alumni are one of the major strengths of our program. We take delight in your successes, and hold you up as examples to our current students every day.

As of September 2006, there are 5,700 alumni of the programs housed in the School of Journalism and Telecommunications. (That includes those of you from the previous Advertising and Television/Radio majors.) While much has likely changed since you were a student here, the fundamentals remain the same. We teach our students to be critical consumers of, and contributors to, the media. We hone their writing, editing and presentation skills. We immerse them in the professional expectations of the various media industries. And we do all this within the framework of a broad liberal arts education.

We emphasize the combination of theory and practice. Students in Integrated Strategic Communication and Telecommunication are required to do internships before they graduate to put into play what they’ve learned in the classroom. Journalism majors are strongly encouraged to do internships, but can also hone their skills with the Kernel, the Kentuckian, and WRFL.

We welcome alumni back to campus as part-time instructors, guest lecturers, internship sponsors, and/or mentors. If you’re interested in participating in any of these ways, please let us know. We hope you’ll also join us for some of our regular events: the James C. Bowling Executive-in-Residence Program, the Excellence in Public Relations Award luncheon, the Joe Creason Lecture Program, and the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame induction luncheon.

Many of the events in the school are covered in our publication, The Alum News. If you would prefer to view The Alum News electronically rather than continue to receive a paper copy, please let us know, and we’ll notify you by e-mail when a new issue is available.

Please tell us what you’re doing these days, in your career and family life. We’d like to keep up with you, and to share your news with your classmates.

As you look over The Alum News and review the other material on this web site, I hope you’ll agree that we have a lot of positive things happening in your school. If you’d like to support us in our efforts to prepare future communication professionals and serve the people of Kentucky and the region, please consider making an on-line contribution. Select “other” in the general designation box, and then School of Journalism and Telecommunications or JAT for your designation. (If you have a specific program within the school you want to support, such as our programming endowment, the IRJCI, the First Amendment Center, or one of our scholarships, type the name of that program in the designation box, including the initials JAT.)
