Essay Contest

The winning entries from our Spring, 2006 First Amendment Essay Contest are now posted.

  • First prize of $1,000 went to Brady Rivers, a junior advertising major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Read her essay on a possible flag burning amendment here (RTF).
  • Second prize of $600 went to Janie Chung, a junior advertising major at Temple University in Philadelphia. Read her essay on whether the Internet merits First Amendment protection here (RTF).
  • Third prize of $400 went to Kelli Donnelly, a senior broadcasting major at University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Read her essay on flag burning here (RTF).

The contest, the first in the Center’s history, was open to juniors and seniors at any U.S. college or university. The contest attracted 83 entries from 15 different universities in 11 states. Students could write about a flag burning amendment, the right of reporters to keep sources confidential, or how much protection the First Amendment should extend to the Internet and other forms of new media technology.
