Mission Statement
The mission of the Telecommunications program in the School of Journalism and Telecommunications is to provide instruction and conduct scholarly research in the creation, production, dissemination, and use of digital media content.
Technological Change
With the introduction of broadcast High Definition Television (HDTV), virtually all forms of both mass and interpersonal [or interactive] communication have moved from analog to digital production and delivery systems. While AM and FM radio transmission systems remain analog technology for the time being, the advent of satellite radio, web streaming, and podcasting brings significant all-digital content and transmission systems to the consumer market as competition to broadcast radio. From an industry organization standpoint, integration of digital technology and content and convergence of business models is at an all-time high. Common carriers, cable systems, wireless providers, and even electrical utilities are all capable of offering telephone service, broadband access to the Internet, and a variety of audio and video content.
Preparing Students for Current and Future Changes
The Telecommunications program at the University of Kentucky is and rightfully should be at the forefront of the rapidly expanding and constantly changing area of telecommunications technology. At the University, and on state, national, and international levels, there has never been a time when telecommunications technologies and their impact on business, entertainment, and human interaction were more at the forefront of public awareness and discussion.
A Greater Understanding of Every Facet of Telecommunications
The Telecommunications program seeks to promote both the study of the means of production and dissemination of digital content, and their ultimate effects on individuals, political communication, civic participation, media organizations, telecommunications policy and practices, and society as a whole. As one of the three majors in the School of Journalism and Telecommunications, the TEL major is most aptly suited to be the leader in the areas of mediated communications theory, production, and management, leading to a greater understanding of the media as organizations that is beneficial for all three majors in the School.
