Joseph B. Miller
Associate Professor
School of Library and Information Science

Joseph Miller earned a B.S. degree in biology from the University of Minnesota and worked in both biochemistry and plant pathology research programs at the University of Kentucky prior to his current career in library and information science. He received his MSLS degree from the University of Kentucky and accepted a faculty appointment at UK in 1992. He currently holds the rank of Associate Professor and devotes the majority of his efforts to teaching technology courses in the LIS curriculum and advising the school on technology issues. Other activities in the school include the oversight of the SLIS Center for Applied Information Technology (CAIT), web site administration, and the delivery of technology workshops. Courses taught include LIS636 Foundations of Information Technology and LIS638 Internet Technologies and Information Services

Mr Miller has published work in both biology and library science. His research interests center around the design, configuration, and application of computer and information technology systems in libraries and the use of instructional technology to support online pedagogy. His recent book Internet Technologies and Information Services was released by Libraries Unlimited in January 2009 and a recent manuscript "Enhancing online courses with audio content to support auditory learning and promote teacher immediacy" is under review. Other publications include "The Internet has changed, like everything" (Kentucky Libraries, volume 70 no. 2: 4-9 Spring 2006) and "PC Security in a Networked World" (Kentucky Libraries, volume 67 no. 4: 18-22 Fall, 2003).

Mr Miller is active in a number of professional organizations and is a past-president of the Kentucky chapter of the Special Libraries Association. A few of his personal interests include woodworking, golf, canoeing, hiking, gardening, mystery novels, and the classic film comedies of the 30's and 40's.
