McConnell Conference 2002 Scrapbook and Report

Over 350 people attended the conference this year. Author Joan Bauer (Rules of the Road, Hope Was Here) opened the conference with an inspiring talk titled "The Ingredients of Humor" Friday evening. Drawing on her writings and life experiences, she spoke of the connection between humor and pain, and humor is really an expression of hope. Author and illustrator Steven Kellogg (The Mysterious Tadpole, A Penguin Pup for Pinkerton) gave an excellent opening session on Saturday titled "The Art of the Picture Book". In addition to the main speakers, numerous minisessions were also given. Sessions included Notable Books 2001-02 with Sara Howrey (Kenton County Library) and Sally Suter (Louisville Free Public Library); Behind the Scenes at the Newbery with Susan Moore and Julie Keller (Louisville Free Public Library), Adapting Tall Tale Humor to the Picture Book Format with author Paul Brett Johnson; Yes, You Can Put on a Puppet Show with Meggan Conway and Tonya Head (Lexington Public Library); and the closing session What's So Funny? with Betsy Tibe (Mary Queen of the Rosary School, Lexington). As always, students from the School of Library and Information Science children's literature classes also hosted Caldecott and Newbery Book discusions.
Conference sponsor Bookwholesalers, Inc. was on hand with a large selection of books for sale, and the SLIS McConnell Center for the Study of Children's Literature book exhibit was available for browsing. Special thanks to McConnell Center graduate assistant Mr Yubao Li for all his help with the exhibits and to SLIS administrative assistant Ms Pam Thompson for all her help with conference preparations and registration.
