The following curriculum plan for the Advanced Teacher Preparation Program is designed for the School Media Librarian who currently holds an M.S.L.S. degree from an ALA accredited library school and is pursuing advancement to a Rank I teaching status in the state of Kentucky. Students must apply to the Graduate School and the School of Library and Information Science and be admitted as a non-degree-seeking student. The program is designed to enhance and enrich the skills and knowledge of the certified school media librarian. Thirty (30) semester hours and satisfactory completion of the portfolio are required to apply to advancement to Rank I teaching status. Twenty-one (21) of the hours must be completed at the University of Kentucky. Up to nine (9) semester hours may be transferred from other institutions. All courses must be graduate level and should be pre-planned with the academic advisor. Candidates for Rank I must meet with the academic faculty advisor to plan a program of study that will meaningfully contribute to the performance and professional growth of the experienced school media specialist.  Coursework must be completed with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and must be completed in an eight-year time period.

      b._______Acceptable completion of at least two portfolio tasks that address at least two Experienced Teacher Standards and at least two subsections of Content Standard II for School Media Librarian.

Exit Requirements:

  1. _______Completion of a minimum of thirty (30) semester hours of course work with minimum GPA of 3.0 for advancement to Rank I teaching status.
  2. _______Satisfactory completion of a portfolio with the following components:

      b._______Table of Contents.
      c._______Personal philosophy statement for professional practice as an experienced school media librarian.
      d._______Matrix indicating which Experienced Teacher Standards and subsections of the Content Standard are addressed in portfolio entries.
      e._______Entries or artifacts demonstrating competency in at least four Experienced Teacher Standards (including Standards I and IX) and four subsections of the Content Standard for School Media Librarian (total of four to eight entries or artifacts).
      f._______Rationale for how each Experienced Teacher Standard/Content Standard is addressed.
      g._______Evidence of continuing professional development.
      h._______Signed statement affirming content is student's own work.
      i._______Signed release form allowing the University of Kentucky, School of Library and Information Science, permission to release portfolio for review by credentialing/accrediting agencies.
