CONSTITUTION
- Article 1 Name
- The official name of this organization shall be the University of Kentucky Student Chapter of the American Library Association.
- Article 2 Purpose
- The purpose and aims of this organization are:
- To facilitate and encourage participation in the American Library Association.
- To acquaint members with the goals, objectives and resources of the American Library Association.
- To encourage professional contacts within the field of librarianship.
- To provide members of the Student Chapter with official representation to the American Library Association and other relevant organizations.
- To actively promote involvement in professional activities beyond the classroom.
- To provide a local forum for the exchange of ideas and information about trends, issues, and opportunities in the profession.
- To develop skills and relationships that will enable students to have a creative impact on the profession.
- To create awareness of national issues in library and information science.
- Article 3 Membership Requirements
- All members of this organization shall be:
- A graduate student who is enrolled in the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky and
- A member of the American Library Association
- Article 4 Activities

A. The chapter shall hold a general meeting at the beginning of each academic semester.
B. Activities and programs will be planned in accordance with the purposes set forth in Article 2.
C. Activities and programs sponsored by the Chapter will be open to individuals who are not chapter members.
- Article 5 Officers

A. The officers of this organization shall consist of a President, President-Elect, and a Secretary/Treasurer, and shall constitute the executive board with the faculty advisor as ex-officio member of the board.
B. The officers may serve as representatives on committees or councils as deemed necessary or appropriate by the administration or faculty of the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky.
C. The officers shall have the following responsibilities:
1. The president shall have the ultimate responsibility for the functioning of the organization.
2. The President-Elect shall act as program coordinator and may form program committees as necessary. The President-Elect shall assume the duties of the President in the latter's absence and shall assume the office of the President should it become vacated during the stated term of office.
3. The Secretary/Treasurer shall be responsible for correspondence and record keeping. As Treasurer, he or she shall be responsible for financial matters pertaining to the organization.
4. The faculty advisor shall act as a liaison between the Student Chapter and the American Library Association and between the Student Chapter and the School of Library and Information Science. The faculty advisor shall also be responsible for the orientation of members to the American Library Association and coordination of the first meeting of each long semester.
D. The President, in consultation with other officers and the faculty advisor, may appoint liaisons to assist with the coordination of chapter activities at off-campus and distance learning sites.
- Article 6 Elections

A. Founding officers shall be elected by a show of hands of a majority of members at the special meeting held to ratify this Constitution. Terms shall expire on April 30, 1993 at which time succeeding officers will be elected. These officers will serve a term effective through the last week of classes, December 1993.
B. Regular elections shall be held during the second week of each fall and spring semester. All candidates must be members of the organization as outlined in Article 3, must nominate themselves and must be able to fulfill the requirements and duties of the office they seek as outlined in this Constitution.
C. The nominees for President-Elect must be available to serve for two semesters. The President-Elect shall serve as President-Elect during their first semester in office and as President during their second semester in office.
D. The nominees for Secretary/Treasurer must be available to serve for one semester. The Secretary/Treasurer will serve for only one semester. Persons so desiring may seek reelection for a second semester. No individual may serve more than two semesters in this position.
E. Officers during the Spring Semester who do not graduate shall be responsible for chapter activities during the 4-Week Intersession and the 8-Week Summer Session.
F. The faculty advisor will serve a term of three years. The faculty advisor will be chosen by the officers of the Student Chapter on advice of the Director of the School of Library and Information Science at The University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky. The faculty advisor may be re-appointed at the discretion of the Student Chapter's elected officers.
G. All elections shall take place by secret ballot and will be publicly posted not less than one week prior to the election. Results will be posted within one week after the election.
H. When a vacancy of an officer occurs, the remaining officers, in consultation with the faculty advisor, may choose to (1) hold a special election to fill the vacant office or (2) leave the office vacant until the next regular election.
- Article 7 Committees

Committees shall be appointed as necessary by the officers. The program coordinator may work with an ad hoc planning committee as needed.
- Article 8 Parliamentary Procedure

All questions of parliamentary procedure shall be decided in accordance with the forms laid down in the most current edition of Robert's Rules of Order.
- Article 9 Amendments

Proposed amendments to the Constitution may be introduced by any member at any meeting or by petition to the President. Ratification shall be determined by a majority of those members present at the next business meeting.
- Article 10 Ratification

Ratification of this constitution shall be determined by a show of hands.
