Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Kentucky Librarianship Scholarship

The Scholarship The University of Kentucky School of Library and Information Science (the School) has been awarded a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Kentucky Librarianship Scholarship, to be awarded to a student who enrolls full-time in the School's master's program either the summer 8-week term 2001 or the fall semester 2001. The Scholarship will pay the recipient's (i) tuition for a maximum of four semesters/terms of full-time enrollment in the master's program and (ii) stipend for a non-credit internship in a Kentucky public library, 10 hours per week, @ $12 per hour, while enrolled in the master's program. (Students currently enrolled in the School's master's program are not eligible to be considered for the Scholarship.)

Criteria in order to be considered The Scholarship will be awarded on a competitive basis. In order to be considered for the Scholarship, a person must:

  • apply to the School's master's program and have been admitted to or show evidence of admissibility to the master's program;
  • ask to be considered for the Scholarship;
  • intend to enroll full-time in the master's program;
  • show evidence of commitment to improving public library service in Kentucky;
  • commit to a non-credit paid internship in a Kentucky public library, 10 hours per week (@ $12 per hour), while enrolled in the master's program;

Basis for selecting recipient In selecting the recipient the committee appointed for that purpose will choose the applicant who, in the committee's collective judgment, best evidences a commitment to improving public library service in Kentucky. (The recipient must enroll full-time and continue full-time enrollment or forfeit the Scholarship.)

A person who wishes to be considered for the Scholarship, and who meets all of the above criteria, should indicate that wish either by noting it on the application to the School's master's program (not on the Graduate School application) or by sending an e-mail message to that effect to the School's Assistant Director, Dennis Carrigan, at carrigan@pop.uky.edu Use that e-mail address also to request information and forms to apply to the School's master's degree program in library and information science.
