The Library and Information Science Student Organization compiled this guide in an effort to assist new students in their transition to Lexington and The University of Kentucky.


HOUSING


One of your primary concerns when preparing for graduate school is determining where you are going to live. UK offers both graduate and family housing options. You may access the UK Graduate and Family Housing Department's Web site at http://www.uky.edu/AuxServ/apartment.html, or contact them directly.

If you are in the Lexington area, it is easy to drive through the city and look for FOR RENT signs. Vacant apartmentsare also advertised in the Lexington Herald Leader and UK's student paper, the Kentucky Kernel.


PARKING AND TRANSPORTATION

There are many resident and general parkinglots on UK's campus. However, all UK lots require that you have a validparking permit for that lot in order to park there during specific hours.Information on parking regulations, on-line permit applications, parkinglot maps, and the UK Motorist Assistance Program is available at http://www.uky.edu/Parking/or by contacting the Parking Services Office directly at:

The closest street parking availablerequires a walk of about 10-15 minutes in order to reach the main campus.

For those who would like to avoid driving tocampus there are several options. Graduate and family housing residentscan make use of the bus and shuttle systems. Buses and shuttles makeseveral daily scheduled stops at various university housing locations. Amap of the bus and shuttle routes and usage regulations are accessiblefrom the Parking and Transportation Services Web site.

Bikes are a welcome form of transportationon the UK campus. Please see the Parking and Transportation Services Website for bike rules and regulations and route and parking maps.

The Lexington bus system, Lextran, stops atmany convenient locations throughout Lexington, including many right oncampus. STUDENT ID

Your student ID will be extremely importantto you while in graduate school. Your student ID allows you to check outlibrary materials, use copiers and printers throughout campus, purchasesupplies, and purchase food at any UK Food Services establishment.

Purchasing from your student ID requiresthat you make a deposit to your Plus Account. The Plus Account is anoptional account. It requires no minimum deposit and may be opened oradded to in any whole dollar amount at any time during the semester at thefollowing locations:

DINING ON CAMPUS

UK Food Services offers a wide variety of selections for dining on campus.

Block & Barrel

Ag Science North and Erikson Hall each have their own Block & Barrel. They are great places to stop to grab a quick breakfast, deli sandwich, soup, chili, or side salad. The Plus Account and cash are accepted.

Commons Market

One of the two food courts on campus, Commons Market offers everything from grilled sandwiches to the Veggie Works. The Stir-Fry Bar, Bakery Street, the Fourth Quarter, Little Italy, and The Lettuce Leaf are just a few of your options. This is a perfect place for south campus students to eat since it is located at the Kirwan-Blanding complex. It's also perfect for the faculty and staff who work at UK's Medical Center. The Diner Account, Plus Account, and cash are accepted.

The Courtyard

An upscale food court style restaurant, The Courtyard is located in Blazer Hall. Daily offerings include traditional, vegetarian, and lite dishes, plus a deli, salad/potato bar, Stir-Fry Station and KFC Xpress. The Diner Account, Plus Account, and cash are accepted.

Intermezzo

The Intermezzo is located on the mezzanine of the Patterson Office Tower. Gourmet coffees, pastries, superb salads, unique sandwiches, and soup are available weekdays. Intermezzo accepts the Plus Account and cash.

K-Lair

Located between Haggin and Donovan Halls, K-Lair offers big value grill items. Stop by for a cooked-to-order breakfast, burgers, grilled sandwiches, chili, salads, pizza, chili dogs, or nightly dinner specials! The Diner Account, Plus Account, and cash are accepted.

Lemon Tree

The Lemon Tree, located on the second floor of Erikson Hall, is a cozy restaurant that offers upscale dining at affordable prices. Call ahead for reservations at 257-4917, or send email to lemtree@uky.edu. Plus Account and cash are accepted.

Ovid's

This upscale coffee shop and restaurant is located at the W. T. Young Library. The Diner Account, Plus Account, and cash are accepted.

Student Center Food Court

Located on the second floor of the Student Center, The Food Court offers a wide variety of options. Long John Silver's, Little Italy, The Coffee Shop, Mark Pi's Express Chinese Fast Food, Mom's Kitchen, Salads and More, and a deli are just a few of the offerings. The Diner Account, Plus Account, and cash are accepted.


LISTSERV

The School of Library and Information Science requires that all students subscribe to the school listserv. This discussion list is an important way for the school to distribute announcements and for the community to share questions and discuss issues.

There are two ways to subscribe to the listserv:

1. Send a SUBSCRIBE SLIS your_name message to LISTSERV@LSV.UKY.EDU (this is the address of the program that manages these lists at UK).

2. Send an e-mail message that includes your full name to the list owner: jbmill00@uky.edu expressing your interest in joining the list.


CENTER FOR APPLIED INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

The Center for Applied Information Technology is located in King Library South, Room 504. This is the private computer lab for students of the School of Library and Information Science. The lab is equipped with several PCs and Macintosh computers, printers, scanners, and other equipment necessary for use in the program. The lab computers are equipped with a wide variety of software applications. McCONNELL CENTER

The McConnell Center is a research collection consisting of award-winning children's and young adult literature. The McConnell Center was created to serve as a resource for SLIS students, public librarians, school librarians, teachers, parents, and authors and illustrators of children's literature. PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS

The School of Library and Information Science offers hosts student chapters of several professional organizations, including the American Library Association (ALA), the Special Libraries Association (SLA), and the American Society for Information Science (ASIS). Each organization hosts several activities each semester that are focused primarily on professional development, and offer leadership opportunities for all students while students in the School of Library and Information Science.
