Special Libraries Association Student Group: Bylaws
ARTICLE I--NAME
The official name of this organization shall be the Special Library
Association Student Group Kentucky Chapter.

ARTICLE II--PURPOSE
The purpose and aims of this organization are:
1. To facilitate and encourage participation in the Special Library
Association.
2. To acquaint members with the goals, objectives and resources of the
Special Library Association.
3. To encourage professional contacts within the field of librarianship.
4. To provide opportunities for joint activities with the Kentucky
Special Libraries chapter.
5. To provide members of the student chapter with official
representation to the Special Library Association.
6. To actively promote involvement in professional activities beyond the
classroom.
7. To provide a local forum for the exchange of ideas and information
about trends, issues and opportunities in the profession.
8. To develop skills and relationships that will enable students to have
a creative impact on the profession.
9. To create awareness of national issues in library and information
science.

ARTICLE III--MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS
All members of this organization shall be:
1. Any student of the University of Kentucky School of Library and
Information Science.
2. Members of the Special Library Association.

ARTICLE IV--ACTIVITIES
1. The student chapter shall hold a general meeting at the beginning of
each academic semester.
2. Activities and progress will be planned in accordance with the
purposes set forth in Article II.
3. Activities and progress sponsored by the student chapter will be open
to individuals who are not chapter members unless otherwise determined.

ARTICLE V--OFFICERS
1. The officers of the Organization shall consist of a President,
Secretary Treasurer and At-Large Member. They shall constitute the
executive board with the advisor as ex-officio member of the board.
2. The officers may serve as representatives on committees or councils
as deemed necessary or appropriate by the administration or faculty of
the College of Library and Information Science at the University of
Kentucky.
3. The officers shall have the following responsibilities:
A. The President shall have the ultimate responsibility for the
functioning of the organization. In addition, shall be responsible for
fulfilling all reporting requirements as required by the national
office. See addendum to the Constitution Part III.
B. The Secretary/Treasurer shall be responsible for
correspondence and record keeping. As Treasurer he/she shall also be
responsible for financial matters pertaining to the organization.
C. The At-Large member shall act as a liaison with other student
organizations with the College of Library and Information Science. In
the event of a vacancy in either the office of President or
Secretary-Treasurer during the normal term of office, the at-large
member will assume that office for the remainder of the term. The term
of the at-large member shall be one semester. (Article V, 3C, has
been amended. Please see Revision 1 in the Bylaws Revisions section.)
D. The faculty advisor shall act as liaison between the chapter
and the Special Library Association and between the chapter and the
College of Library and Information Science. In the absence of any
on-going members, the faculty advisor shall also be responsible for the
orientation of members to the Special Library Association and
coordination of the first meeting.

ARTICLE VI--ELECTIONS
1. Elections for President and Secretary/Treasurer shall be held in the spring semester unless otherwise
necessitated. Elections for the At-Large member shall be held at the
beginning of each semester.
2. Terms of office of the President and Secretary/Treasurer shall be
Jan. through December. One semester for the At-Large member.
3. Nominations and elections for officers shall be coordinated by the
Executive Board.
4. All members in good standing of the chapter are entitled to vote for
the officers of the organization.
5. All elections shall take place by secret ballot and will be publicly
posted not less than one week prior to the election. Results will be
posted within one week after the election.
6. Vacancies in office that occur during the normal term of office shall
be filled by a special election.

ARTICLE VII--COMMITTEES
Committees shall be appointed as necessary by the officers.

ARTICLE VIII--AMENDMENTS
Proposed amendments to the Constitution may be introduced by any member
at any meeting. Ratification shall be determined by a majority of those
members present at the next business meeting.

ARTICLE IX--RATIFICATION
Ratification of this Constitution shall be determined by vote by a show
of hands.

BYLAWS REVISIONS
1. Article V: Officers, 3.C. has been amended such that the
At-Large member is now the NKU Liaison to the UK SLA Student Group. This
office is to held by a student attending, primarily, the Northern
Kentucky University (NKU) campus, or a student who is able to travel to
the NKU campus for activities. The Liaison will organize, promote, and
conduct SLA Student Group activities on, and around, the NKU Campus. The
liaison will report to the Student Group president and faculty adviser.
2. Article VI: Elections has been amended such that all
officers will be elected by at least a quorum of Student Group members,
as the offices are needed to be filled (optimal times are described,
below). Offices will optimally be begun in the fall semester, and
optimally held for two semesters (or at least six months). During the
second half of the term in office, elections will be held for
officers-elect. The officers-elect will be taught the role, duties, and
responsibilities of their respective, future offices by the officers
presiding. The officers-elect will optimally become full officers at the
end of the semester.
