Course Description
Introduction to the theories and practice of bibliographic description and subject analysis. Covers the organization of both print and electronic information, including use of Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd ed. rev. (AACR2R), Dewey Decimal Classification System Abridged (DDC), Library of Congress Classification System (LCC), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), and MAchine-Readable Cataloging (MARC) formats.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course, students will be familiar with or have a working knowledge of the following:
1. Basic principles and theories of bibliographic control; to include: bibliographic description, access
points, authority control, classification, and subject analysis
2. Types and functions of manual and online bibliographic records
3. Practical application of standards and tools for bibliographic description, classification, subject
analysis, and encoding using DDC, LCC, LCSH, and MARC formats to create original
bibliographic records for a variety of materials
Attendance will not be taken, however, you are responsible for any missed classwork, assignments, and information. It is to your advantage and greater understanding to attend class and participate in discussions. We learn from each other and I believe the class discussions to be one of the most valuable resources.
An incomplete grade due to illness or other emergencies may be arranged; please see me.
Test I Descriptive cataloging (AACR2R) 25%
Test II Classification and subject analysis (DDC, LCC, LCSH) 25%
Test III MARC formats; online cataloging 20%
