Office of the Dean

Dear Prospective Student,

Thank you for accessing our home page. We are very excited about the future of the College of Communications and Information Studies, since we are at the core of our emerging information economy.

The College, which is currently celebrating its 15th Anniversary, prepares students for leadership roles in a rapidly changing professional world, within the context of a liberal arts education. Our units each focus on different aspects of how we construct, process, store and share effective messages; contributing to a unique synergistic blending at the college level. The Department of Communication focuses on the interpretation, preparation, and effects of communication messages, particularly those affecting health communication. The School of Journalism and Telecommunications focuses on guaranteeing the free flow of information through its traditional focus on the First Amendment. Its members also focus on disseminating and synthesizing information from a variety of sources for a mass audience. The School of Library and Information Science has traditionally dealt with issues of information storage (e.g., quality and management of information resources), access and retrieval systems, and the information seeking skills of individuals. It also has a special role in KERA through its traditional emphasis on children's literature.

Whatever your interests, our website will provide you with much more detailed information about what our college has to offer. It also contains information on contacts you can make to follow-up with myself, our professional advising staff, our development officer, or one of the heads of our academic units.

We look forward to hearing from you and hope to see you soon on the UK campus.

Sincerely,

J. David Johnson, Dean
