Introduction

Library Science classes were first offered at UK at the undergraduate level in 1918. The present School of Library and Information Science offers master’s degrees and is one of only fifty programs in the United States accredited by American Library Association and is the only program in Kentucky. The school focuses on information storage, access and retrieval systems and information seeking skills of individuals. The School is committed to enhancing the quality of information service in a culturally diverse, technological and global society. It has a long tradition of distance learning, developing courses delivered via the Internet and through the Commonwealth Virtual University. The school also has a special role in the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA) through its long-standing emphasis on children’s literature.
