National Center for Educaton Statistics Readme
Readme File for NCES 97-543
This file, README.1ST, describes the structure of this compact disc.
The Integrated Postsecondary Data System (IPEDS) 1994 CD-ROM provides raw
data from five IPEDS data files and an extract file (ANLYS94.DAT)
which includes information (variables) extracted from the following five
data files:
Completions 1993-1994
Institutional Characteristics 1994-1995
Fall Enrollment 1994-1995
Staff Salaries 1994-1995
Finance 1993-1994
The extract file includes approximately 1,500 items of information about
institutions drawn from the five data files which are placed into a
single record. Each of the five data files provides information about
institutions for the year specified above.
The extract file, like the complete IPEDS files from which it is derived,
is stored as a raw or ASCII file and may be accessed with such statistical
programs as SPSS-PC/Windows or SAS-PC/Windows. Each of the five files is
in a separate directory in the DATFILES directory of the compact disk.
The extract file is in the EXTRCT94 directory. IPEDS data files for 1990,
1991, 1992 and 1993 are available on the CD-ROM volumes for those respective
years (or on the Internet).
A special extract file that includes information on the same 1500 variables
for the years 1990 through 1994 has been developed to be directly accessed on
this IPEDS CD-ROM with a special windows-based interface. Various complex
combinations of information and records can be selected.
Data from this multi-year extract file can also be exported for use with
spreadsheet or database programs. Familiarity with the data and the
documentation is required to more fully utilize the data and programs on
this CD-ROM.
Documentation for the respective data sets is located in the IPEDINFO
subdirectory and in each IPEDS survey subdirectory.
The construction of this compact disc is based on two assumptions:
o that users would examine and extract specific data about
postsecondary education institutions from an integrated data file,
using the interface to do so; and
o that users would extract portions of the IPEDS data files from this
compact disk using statistical processors and store the extracted
files on their hard disks.
NOTE: The Completions 1993-1994 and Finance 1993-1994 files correspond
to the 1993-1994 academic year while Fall Enrollment 1994-1995,
Institutional Characteristics 1994-1995, and Staff Salaries
1994-1995 correspond to the 1994-1995 academic year.
The following are instructions on how to install this program from windows.
1. From the file menu in the Program Manager choose Run. Type the CD-ROM
drive letter followed by colon and then type "setup".
2. Hit the OK button or press Enter.
3. The dialogue box specifies the amount of disk space needed, the disk
space available and the default directory.
4. You can change the directory name by editing the existing one. The
directory name should contain the full path including the drive
letter followed by ":".
The installation program creates an IPEDS94 icon in the program group called
"IPEDS94 CD-ROM". Click on this icon to start the program in WINDOWS. The
setup program also creates a Table Generator icon. Clicking on this icon
will start up the Table Generator. Additional icons are created to access
Help documentation.
Note: If the CD-ROM reader is on a network, the IPEDS program may not
be able to locate the CD-ROM installation. In this situation,
the IPEDS program will present the message "Error opening
database" when it is started. To correct this problem, the
IPEDS.SET file (located in the IPEDS94 directory, or whatever
directory was chosen during the installation) must be edited.
Open the IPEDS.SET file in an editor and in every line that
references the DataPath, such as;
STRING DataPath="0:\\IPEDS94\\"
you must replace the "0" with the letter of the CD-ROM drive.
Example: If the CD-ROM is attached to the F:\ drive on the
network, the DataPath in the IPEDS.SET file should read:
STRING DataPath="F:\\IPEDS94\\"
Remember that ALL lines referencing the DataPath MUST be altered
in this way.
Tip: We recommend placing the "mscdex" command line before the "smartdrv"
command line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. This may enhance the speed of
data retrieval from the CD-ROM.
Note: A message will appear during installation to add " SHARE.EXE
/L:500" to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Disregard the message if this line
already exists in the AUTOEXEC.BAT, or if you have installed either
Access 2.0 or Windows for Workgroups. In the latter cases, VSHARE.386
will be added to the AUTOEXEC.BAT and no problems should be
encountered when running the IPEDS94 CD-ROM program.
The IPEDS CD-ROM requires approximately 3.0 MB of free disk space. An
additional 4.0 MB of disk space is required for programs and files.
The following list of subdirectories and files describes the contents of this compact disk.

NOTE: all files denoted above as archive files are in PKZIP (.ZIP) format.
to unzip and use these files, you must use the PKUNZIP utility or any
utility which will read PKZIP archives. The utility on the CD-ROM is
provided as a convenience for the user.
To unzip the file from DOS, create a directory into which the file will be
copied. Then change to that directory and type:
{CD-ROM Drive}:\TOOLS\PKUNZIP {CD-ROM Drive}:\{directory}\{file}.zip
Where {CD-ROM Drive} is the letter designating your CD-ROM and {file} is the
name of the file you wish to unzip.
For example: if your CD-ROM drive were designated as "D" and you wished to
unzip the salary archive, you might type:
C:> md salary
C:> cd salary
C:\salary> D:\TOOLS\PKUNZIP D:\SALARY94\SA9495.ZIP
ACROREAD.EXE is necessary to view the original survey forms. To install the
ADOBE ACROBAT READER from the Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu
(the Start menu for Windows95 users), type
(Your CD-ROM Drive Letter):\TOOLS\ACROREAD.EXE and press Enter.
For example, if your CD-ROM is designated as drive "D", you would type:
