HOW TO GET STARTED

IN WINDOWS:

1. Go to File Manager (Win 3.*) or Explorer (Win95)

2.   Open window for CD

3.   Double-click SETUP.EXE in \DASW

     Setup will then prompt you for drives and settings as needed,
     and create a Windows DAS program group. If you already have a
     windows DAS installed, use the same DASW directory. SETUP will
     automatically create a new subdirectories as needed.

4. To run a DAS, double click on its icon within the DAS group.

IN DOS:

1. From a DOS prompt, run INSTALL.EXE in the subdirectory for the
     data you wish to use. For PF3 data with the CD as E:
     {         E:\PF3\INSTALL                  }

2. The installation program will place the needed files on your PC.

3. To run a DAS, execute the ???DAS.EXE program with /T for tables
     or /C for a correlation matrix. For PF3 tables, installed on
     C:\PF3  (from a C:\PF3> prompt),
     {         PF3DAS /T                       }

The DAS is a menu driven system that allows you to produce frequencies,
crosstabulations, and correlation matrices without access to individuals'
responses, and is therefore provided for public use by the U.S. Department
of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

The DAS does not contain all variables from any of the listed studies,
but does contain most of those which are of interest to analysts
for descriptive purposes.

This CD contains both MS-DOS and Windows versions of the DAS along
with HOW2DAS.TXT, a file that gives specific examples of how to build
tables using the MS-DOS version of the NSOPF:93 DAS (look in \MISC).

This system is protected by Federal Law. Please carefully
read the information that follows.

DAS will NOT display individual records.
Tampering with the files in this system in an attempt to access
individual records is a violation of Federal Law and can result
in a fine of $250,000 and imprisonment of up to 5 years.
