Tips and Tricks!

Please Read!!!

SSTARS Plotter Policy

  1) The SSTARS Center Poster printing hours are from 8 AM to 5 PM ;  M - F . We will no longer be taking posters on a walk-in basis. You must call in advance to schedule a day for your poster/posters to be printed. The files and paper for your posters must be dropped off at the SSTARS Center no later than 3 PM on the day you are scheduled. Most posters should be turned around within one day, but we offer no guarantee due to unforeseen technical problems. Please make sure your scheduled date is at least 3 days before your date of needing the poster. If you miss your scheduled date, you will have to re-schedule for the next available date, no exceptions.

  2) Posters should be turned in either PDF (preferable) or in Microsoft PowerPoint and be brought on a CD or a Flash drive. You can also mail us at stlath2@uky.edu and ska226@uky.edu, but we would appreciate if you could come in person and turn in the files. Before mailing please call and inform us. Your page setup should be set to the size you want the poster to be and not exceed the maximum page size of 56 X 36 ( in inches) landscape/portrait . Please proofread your posters before you bring them to be printed. We will no longer be printing drafts of posters for proof-reading purposes. You should carefully check your poster before bringing it over. We will only re-print posters due to technical and application problems on our part.

  3) We provide a coated paper to print posters on or you may provide a roll of the 36 inch by 7mil High-Glossy Photo Paper. The Glossy Photo Paper can be purchased at Lynn Copies, 328 Old East Vine, (255-1021). Some other options are
      1) HP Instant-Dry Indoor Glossy Banner Paper, 36" x 50'
      2) Magic MUG-7 High Gloss Resin Coated Photobase Paper - 7 Mil/170 Gram

  4) If you or your department/lab plan are printing 3 or more research posters with white backgrounds or if you plan on printing a poster/posters with a colored background, (effective from 1st March, 2008) you will be asked to purchase and contribute an ink cartridge/cartridges to our pool of ink cartridges. These cartridges will not be returned. Ink Cartridges may be purchased at Lynn Copies or Office Depot/Max for around $40 - $47. We will let you know which cartridge to buy at the time you call to fix your appointment. Below is a list of the ink cartridges:

  5) The best way to place images in your PowerPoint poster is by using jpg files and insert>object rather than 'cut and paste'. PowerPoint files (*.ppt) greater than 15MB sometimes create enormously large print files and inadvertently crash the memory of the computer when being sent to the plotter. Please convert the PowerPoint format files to PDF files while turning in the file.

  6) Call Scott (8 AM to 11 AM) or Sushama (1 PM to 5 PM) at 257-9260, M - F, to schedule an appointment for poster printing. When scheduling a date please let us know the number of posters and the type of paper you will print them on. On your print date, you will not be allowed to print more posters than you have been scheduled for.

  7) Patrons are responsible to take back the print media and other related materials with them once their print job is completed. The SSTARS center will not be responsible for any materials left with us once the print job is completed.
