Email: jerzyr@uky.edu

Meeting Time: Thursday 5:30-8:00
Place: MLK 213G

The aim of this course is an exposition of the history and theory of the moving image in its relation to contemporary architecture. We will begin with a review of the development of the cinema from the Camera Obscura to the first projected moving images. Next we will consider the emergence and early development of Montage. Finally we will look at a variety of visual experiments as the moving image moves from cinema through the television screen to the computer monitor. Throughout the course we will undertake to link the transformations in the production of the moving image with the changes in production of architecture. We will examine these concepts through reading, listening and watching as means of making.

In addition to assigned readings and required screenings, student work will consist of a digital video project and a corresponding 15-page research paper.

Attendance is mandatory; 4 unexcused absences wiill result in the lowering of the final grade one full step; 5 unexcused absences will result in automatic failure. Students should expect weekly reading and making assignments throughout the semester.

Additional time may be required for production, editing and outside screenings. The idea festival and a field trip may also be added to the schedule.
