Each year, the Kentuckiana Masonry Institute sponsors a design competition for students in the University of Kentucky's School of Architecture. This year students were asked to design a memorial for Professor Stephen C. Deger. Professor Deger was actively involved in admissions and teaching at the College of Design until his death on January 8, 2009. Professor Deger had a significant impact on nearly every student who has been through the architecture program. You can read more about Professor Deger at this memorial web page.
Students were required to use no more that 100 modular bricks and cover an area no greater than 12 square feet. The bricks were provided on site the day of the competition. No mortar or adhesives were allowed but mechanical fasteners were acceptable. And, the constructions were required to be safe for both builders and observers.
The winners (Al Ataide, Matt Flamm, and William Pruitt) were invited to the KMI Awards Luncheon at the Mohamed Ali Center in Louisville KY on April 23, 2009.
