Gary Bates
Director of Space Group, OsloGary Bates is director of the architectural office Space Group in Oslo, Norway. Trained in the United States, Bates has worked for the last fifteen years in Europe and Asia. After serving as director at Rem Koolhaas's OMA, Bates, along with partner Gro Bonesmo, a former project director at OMA, opened Space Group in Oslo in 1998. They were joined by a third partner, Adam Kurdahl in 2000. Space Group has since become one of the important emerging firms in Europe. Space Group's work ranges from retail and housing to large scale urban planning projects. Recent projects include the Vestbane expansion in Oslo in collaboration with Rem Koolhaas and OMA, and a new ferry terminal for the Hurtigruta Line in Tromsø, in northern Norway. They have also recently won a competition for a hotel in Malmo, Sweden, as well as the commission to redesign the Oslo Central Train Station, a project of more than 100,000 square meters that will include station facilities, hotel, office, retail and event spaces. Bates was the curator of the 2007 Oslo Triennale.
