The Center for Historic Architecture and Preservation (CHAP) is a research center operated by the College of Design. CHAP conducts original design and preservation research and supports graduate students with research assistantships funded through grants and sponsored projects.

CHAP's goals include documenting historic buildings and landscapes, offering professional perspectives on their preservation, and disseminating information gathered through its research projects to project sponsors, preservation agencies and organizations, scholars, and the general community.

The Center works closely with State Historic Preservation Offices and other agencies and organizations at national, state and local levels.
