





The College of Design has been able to hire ten world-class designers and thinkers.
Three of the new faculty are Assistant Professors:Anne Filson is an educator, researcher and practitioner. Her research seeks to identify how reforming the architectural business model and employing emergent tools can leverage the full capabilities that architects possess, in order to restore and sustain the profession's relevance in contemporary society. Anne has pursued the critical practice of architecture through a wide range of project types and scales. She served as a Project Architect at The Office for Metropolitan Architecture/Rem Koolhaas, pursued Strategy and Design Consulting in IDEO's Smart Space Practice, and has worked at both large corporate and small design-centric firms. She is presently a partner in the architecture firm Filson and Rohrbacher. She holds a M.Arch degree from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Smith College. Ms. Filson work and writings have been published in A+U and Metropolis magazine.
Gary Rohrbacher is the co-founder of Filson and Rohrbacher llc, a development, architecture and construction company that uses leading edge technologies to produce innovative buildings with reduced environmental impact. Mr. Rohrbacher has worked as a project manager with SHoP Architects, a senior designer at Skimdmore Owings and Merrill, and senior designer for Machado and Silvetti Associates. Mr. Rohrbacher received his M.Arch Degree from Columbia University, and a Master of Science in Architecture Studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has taught at the University of Texas in Austin as an assistant professor, and at the Harvard Graduate School of Design where he received a teacher of the year award.
Nick Puckett is filling the first ever College of Design / College of Engineering joint appointment. Nick is an architect, programmer, and interactive systems developer. He received a B.Arch and an M.Arch from the Savannah College of Art and Design, and an M.Arch from the Design Research Lab at the Architectural Association. He is the founder/director of AltN Research+Design, an architectural practice that develops custom hardware/software design tools and interactive spaces. He previously worked for Zaha Hadid Architects establishing a Research and Development unit, which focused on new computational design tools and methods, and his work has been shown internationally including the Venice, Sevilla, and Beijing Biennales.
Two are Visiting Professors:Mattijs Bouw is the Sutherland Visiting Professor of Landscape Design. In 1995 Matthijs Bouw set up the architectural office One Architecture, which is involved in a wide range of projects, from designing private houses to organizing the Atelier Deltametropool for VROM. The office advocates an integrated design approach working with other offices and external experts, such as the engineering firm Arup and the artist Berend Strik. One Architecture has been involved in many competitions including; Les Halles in Paris (together with OMA, XDGA). Other projects include: children's day care center ‘Het Kasteel', Villa Bollen in Bakel, football stadium Wankdorf, Hotel Pro Forma, APM Stations Schiphol and urban design schemes for Deventer, Dordrecht, Eindhoven and Tbilisi (Georgia).
In addition to his work as director of One Architecture, Matthijs Bouw teaches at various educational institutes, such as the Architecture Academies in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, the TU in Delft, and institutes in Graz and Los Angeles. He holds the chair of buildings theory and principles of design at the RWTH in Aachen. Bouw publishes and lectures on a range of subjects throughout the world. He is currently working on the publication "How to be an Architect in North Pacific America or Anywhere Around the World." A volume was recently devoted to One Architecture in the DD Design series.
Joe Tanney is the current John Russell Groves Kentucky Housing Corporation Visiting Professor of Affordable Housing Design in the University of Kentucky College of Design. He founded Resolution: 4 Architecture in 1990 an internationally published and highly acclaimed firm. Their recent awards include: the 2005 American Architecture Award by the Chicago Athenaeum, the 2006 National AIA Housing Award for concepts in Innovative Housing, and the winning entry in the DWELL Home Design Invitational for modern prefabricated homes.
Mr. Tanney has taught at the City College of New York, and served as a visiting critic at Yale University, Parsons School of Design, Ohio State University and the University of Kentucky. Prior to the formation of Resolution: 4 Architecture, he worked in the offices of Gwathmey Siegel and Associates Architects, and Eisenman Robertson Architects. Joseph Tanney is also known for designing Peter Eisenman's Manhattan apartment.
Five are Instructors:Angela Co is the founder of Studio-Co, an architectural initiative in pursuit of possible worlds through critical inquiry into our natural and constructed ones. She has worked on theoretical and built projects with Bernard Tschumi Architects, Asymptote Architecture, and Atema Architecture. Co holds a M.Arch Degree in Architecture from Columbia University and dual Bachelor Degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in Architecture and Computer Science. She has taught at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design and Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Presentation.
Kyle Miller received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture from the University of Michigan and graduated with distinction from UCLA while obtaining his M.Arch of Architecture Degree. Mr. Miller completed his research studio at UCLA with Neil Denari and was awarded the AIA School Medal & Certificate of Merit. He has worked for offices in Milwaukee, Los Angeles, and most recently with UNStudio in Amsterdam. In pursuit of digital design and fabrication applications, Kyle has recently established eightyeight-west, an architectural design office and research entity.
Andrew Manson's research focuses on the history of modern architecture, with an emphasis on the interrelationship of architecture, archaeology and politics in modern Italy. He holds a BA in Classical Studies from Queen's University, an MA in Classics from University College London, and an MPhil in Architectural History from Columbia University where he is completing his dissertation, 'Architecture, Archaeology and Urbanism in Roma Mussolinea: The Via dell'Impero and the Palazzo Littorio Competition.' His research has been supported by grants from the Mellon Foundation, the British School at Rome, the Canadian Center for Architecture, and the C.V. Starr Foundation. His current work centers on the architectural refashioning of Rhodes during the Italian occupation of the Dodecanese.
Ryan Johnson is a designer and educator who practices and resides in Cincinnati, Ohio. Prior to moving to Cincinnati, Ryan was a Designer at the office of Paul Preissner Architects in Chicago who's architectural work has been included in exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago (Young Chicago), the Venice Biennale, the Rotterdam Biennale, and the Shenzhen Biennale and is currently in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. In July 2009, Ryan's recent work, "Off-Grid Scenarios" was featured on archinect.com, which was also selected for the "Best in Show" award by Mark Linder, Stanley Tigerman, Sarah Whiting and Ross Wimer at the University of Illinois-Chicago’s Year End Show on May 8. Ryan has also taught Digital Design Courses at the University of Illinois-Chicago. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of Kentucky and a M.Arch from the University of Illinois-Chicago, where he was the recipient of the American Institute of Architects Henry Adams Medal of Merit.
Erick Carcamo currently teaches architecture at Columbia University GSAPP, Pratt Institute and has recently taught at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, die Angewandte. He has worked as a senior designer for Coop-himmelb(l)au in Vienna, Asymptote Architecture NYC, and Hernan Diaz-alonso's Xefirotarch. Born in El Salvador, Erick holds a M.Arch degree in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University GSAPP and a Bachelor's degree from the Southern California Institute of Architecture SCI-Arc, having been awarded nearly full scholarships for both universities.
Erick Carcamo is principal co-founder of X|Atelier. X|Atelier's design intentions and processes deviate towards the extreme conditions of innovation and the pure coherence of technique invention; a practice networked in Europe and latin America. Their expertise is based on experimental techniques of animation software, scripting and continuous academic research.
