At the beginning of the Fall Semester‚ Dining Services initiated a contest for parents of our Residential students to integrate some of their “home cooking” favorites into the current menu selections at Blazer Café and Commons Market. As we neared the end of the semester‚ nearly 100 recipes were submitted‚ covering the 6 food categories for review and selection. By the end of the semester‚ a group of managers‚ staff members‚ and students were asked to sort through the entries to determine which items would be selected as the winner in each category. The following items made the final cut:
- Appetizer: Artichoke-Spinach Dip‚ submitted by Sue Ann Foster
- Salad: Mixed Greens with Pancetta and Parmesan‚ submitted by JoNell Benson
- Side Dish: Two-Cheese Macaroni‚ submitted by Clair Ross
- This & That: Chicken Salad on Croissants‚ submitted by Barbara Payne
- Entrée: Bowtie Pasta with Smoked Salmon & Dill‚ submitted by JoNell Benson
- Dessert: Chocolate Heaven‚ submitted by Mary Ellen Murray
Once the selections were made‚ our culinary staff went to work on expanding the ingredient lists for high volume production. On January 24th‚ each of the winning recipes was featured in both our Residential Dining units for display and sampling of nearly 2‚000 of our regular student guests. This display was such a huge hit‚ it may become a regular feature in our rotation of annual featured events.

The University of Kentucky is proud to offer a wide variety of menu items. We serve everything from apples to ziti! Sandwiches‚ salads‚ soup‚ pizza‚ burgers‚ entrées‚ veggies‚ pasta‚ taco salads‚ Oriental entrées‚ and frozen yogurt are just a few of the items you can find on campus. We also take great pride in the fact that every location offers numerous low–fat and vegetarian items. If you want it‚ you’ll find it at one of our locations!
