COURSE DEVELOPMENT BLUEPRINT:
Recommended Naming Conventions
As you develop content for your Distance Learning course, we recommend you follow these basic rules when naming your files. In response to faculty concerns, this has been developed in order to simplify the identification and location of course-related files. We recommend that you follow this naming convention for all your course-related files.
- Create a folder for your course, naming it with the CourseID (For example, "NUR602" or "RC615")
- Create subfolders within this folder labeled by weeks or units or modules (For example, Week1, Week2, Week3, etc. or Module1, Module2, Module3, etc.)
- Choose a file name that briefly describes the subject matter or person being interviewed. Please try to keep the name short. (For example, if the topic of your file is "Employment Options for the Elderly or Retired" you might want to name it "EmployOptions" or "ElderlyOptions".)
- At the end of the file name, add an underscore ("_") and then your LinkBlueID. This will allow us to trace your file back to you in case there are any problems.
- Some other things to keep in mind:
- DO NOT use any spaces in your filename. Use an underscore ("_") in place of any spaces.
- DO NOT use any special characters, such as @, #, $, %, &, * etc. These cause problems when the links are created.
If you follow these recommendations, you should end up with something like this:
- Folder: CourseID
- Subfolder: Week# (or Module#)
- Filename: SubjectName_LinkBlue ID.fileextension
COURSEID\Week#\SubjectName_LinkBlueID.fileextension
Here are some examples, based on our recommendations:
- Folder: NUR602
- Subfolder: Week1
- Filename: FirstAid_lorse2.wmv
NUR602\Week1\FirstAid_lorse2.wmv
- Folder: RC615
- Subfolder: Module7
- Filename: CounselingChildren_kdlair2.html
RC615\Module7\CounselingChildren_kdlair2.html
