Do Distance Learning course credits apply towards graduation?

Yes. If you take a course through Distance Learning Programs, you will earn the same credit as if you had taken the course on the main campus. As with on-campus courses, not all offerings are applicable to all degrees. If you have questions about a specific course, please consult your adviser or department chair. If we offer a course that applies toward your degree, taking it through Distance Learning will not change that. In addition, Distance Learning Programs does offer select complete graduate degree programs. Please take a moment to review our Distance Learning Programs.

Can I earn a degree online?

Currently the University of Kentucky offers individual online courses that can be applied towards your undergraduate degree. There are professional and graduate programs available online.

In addition to tuition, are there any Distance Learning fees?
  • Students will pay a $10/credit hour fee for all hours taken through DLP.
  • Nonresident students will be charged resident tuition if they are enrolled ONLY in online courses.
Am I eligible for financial aid as a Distance Learning student?

As a Distance Learning student, you are enrolled at the University of Kentucky and are entitled to the same financial aid access and privileges as any on-campus student. Please contact the Office of Student Financial Aid for more information on your specific needs.

What is the difference between Distance Learning and Independent Study courses?

Distance Learning courses are offered within the traditional semester framework. Independent Study courses are offered in a correspondence-style format, offered with anytime enrollment, and will not show up on the transcript until the course has been completed. Please contact the Independent Study Program for further information by calling toll-free at 1-800-432-0963 or istudy@uky.edu.

How do online courses work?

Online courses utilize a number of Internet technologies such as email, discussion boards, chat rooms, and audio/video streams.

The University of Kentucky uses Blackboard as our course management system. A computer with a minimum computer configuration is required.

How do interactive video courses work?

Interactive video is two-way audio and video technology that enables students at remote sites to participate in the same course in a real-time learning environment. This means that your instructor may not be in your classroom but you will still have access via a direct video feed. On-site technicians proctor classes and assist with any difficulties.

How do I buy textbooks?

You may purchase textbooks at one of the following bookstores such as the UK Bookstore, Wildcat Textbooks, and Kennedy Bookstore or from other online sources. These stores sell many used books for less and usually will buy your books back at the end of the semester.
