Distance Learning Online: Overview

Students taking online-only courses will not have to physically attend a traditional class and therefore will save time and money with regard to travel to and from the classroom location. In addition, assignments and class participation are conducted "asynchronously," meaning that the students can pick their study time according to their individual schedule. Faculty share these convenience factors as well. Students taking a multimedia course have all the benefits of an online-only course, but there is an added television component to view.

Do not expect the classes to be any less rigorous or educational, however. The University of Kentucky strives to ensure that all multimedia students receive the same quality education they would receive in the traditional classroom. In fact, the online classroom environment itself contributes to the development of good and regular study habits.

In order to take online classes students must first be admitted to the University of Kentucky. You must first be registered for a course before you may begin participation. You may do this through UK VIP, WebUK, or by mailing or Faxing (859 257 9686) Distance Learning Programs

If you are taking an online course with a television component you need to follow the steps below and check your class's broadcast schedule. You need to participate in both the online part as well as watch, or record and watch the television program, for credit for the course. If you miss a program they are available after the air date in the Lexmark Audio Visual center in the basement of the W. T. Young Library.

If you are registered for an online class you need to do the following, even if you have taken an online course before. Login information will be available on the FIRST day of classes for each semester

Here is a list of common plugins used in online courses, and links to the download site for each (links open in a new window) . Check with your instructor to see if you need any of these plugins.
