COLLEGE OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION STUDIES
School of Library and Information Science
Coursework in Library and Information Science
Locations: Northern Kentucky University, Louisville
Delivered via: on-site instruction, interactive video, internet
The University of Kentucky School of Library and Information Science offers degree programs at both Northern Kentucky University and the University of Louisville. The School does not offer all of its courses at those locations, but the School’s goal is to offer enough courses through several delivery means ([i] onsite at those locations, [ii] by video at those locations, [iii] via the Internet) to enable a student to complete the degree program at Northern Kentucky or Louisville.
The School offers certain distance learning (DL) courses that typically require little student presence on the main campus. Distance learning courses utilize a variety of delivery methods, including face-to-face instruction in a location away from the main campus by regular or part-time LIS faculty, or through a number of instructional technologies including the Internet, interactive TV, compressed video, or videotape. It should be noted that courses taught via any of these delivery methods often require some class meetings in Lexington or at a remote site, and that while they can offer increased flexibility, it is the responsibility of the student to explore the requirements of each course.
The School supports part-time studies in a variety of ways. In addition to the availability of DL courses via instructional technologies that allow for flexible curricular engagement, some courses are scheduled in late afternoon, evening, and occasionally on Saturday in order to provide working students, for whom part-time study is essential, better access to the School’s master’s-degree program.

COLLEGE OF SOCIAL WORK
Master of Social Work
Locations: Morehead State University, Northern Kentucky University, and Hazard Center for Rural Health
Delivered via: onsite instruction and some onsite interactive video
The University of Kentucky College of Social Work offers a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree program at three distance learning locations - Morehead State University, Northern Kentucky University, and the Hazard Center for Rural Health. (Please note: Students participating in these programs are UK students attending classes at these distance learning locations. Students should not seek admission to these other schools.)
UK’s College of Social Work MSW distance learning program offers students a quality education focused on meeting student needs. While UK’s MSW program is nationally recognized and accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, the College of Social Work understands that many of students work and have families. The MSW program is designed with some flexibility in mind. The duration of the MSW program depends upon a student’s background. For those students with prior social work education and experience, the course requirements may be significantly reduced allowing for many students to graduate within five semesters (two years). Other students will normally graduate in 8 semesters (three years). Courses are offered in the evenings allowing for students to work full-time jobs while pursuing their graduate degree. In addition to regular class instruction, the MSW program requires completion of 900 hours of field practicum. Evening and weekend placements for these practicum placements are always available.
The MSW program also offers specializations in Mental Health, Family and Community, School Social Work, and Gerontology. These innovative specializations equip graduates for the complex professional tasks and responsibilities often encountered in the work place. Students will choose one of two concentrations beginning their second year: Mental Health or Family/Community Practice. The Mental Health concentration is oriented around mental health issues and problems that cut across social and economic strata, ethnicities, and gender. (This concentration is currently offered at the Northern Kentucky University location.) The second concentration, Family/Community, centers on societal elements that are essential to all persons, particularly those who find themselves living in conditions often characterized by poverty, oppression, or structural inequities. (This concentration is currently offered at the Morehead State University and Hazard Center for Rural Health locations.) In addition to these two concentrations, students may choose to specialize in school social work or in gerontology. Certificates are offered in both of these specialties.
