Faculty Toolkit

Welcome, Distance Learning Faculty! We are pleased that you are interested in developing and delivering a Distance Learning course and/or full program working with our DLP and TASC professional and support staff. Through our research of best practices and our work with faculty, we have identified essential elements for DL course development and delivery that should be addressed to ensure both an instructive and invigorating process for the faculty developer as well as a stimulating learning environment that promotes student engagement and inquiry.

To achieve this goal, we have put together this Toolkit that will provide you with a guide of the essential elements on which to focus during your development process.

IN PARTICULAR, THESE MATERIALS ARE INTENDED TO:

  • Help us get to know you and your course needs and goals
  • Help you understand the process for creating a distance learning course
  • Define the responsibilities and interactions between you (the faculty) and the consultants in Distance Learning Programs (DLP) and throughout the Teaching and Academic Support Center (TASC)
  • Ensure that all distance learning courses and programs are in compliance with SACS standards by:
    • Coordinating with academic department and colleges, the Registrar’s Office and the Faculty Senate on the Distance Learning Course Approval Process
    • Providing a rubric based on national research and standards of essential course elements necessary for online learning as outlined in the Quality Matters program developed at the University of Maryland
    • Providing additional resources and guidelines to consider during development
    • Conducting an informational post-delivery review of the course development process and vision for future modifications to the online course

TOOLKIT ELEMENTS:

  • Toolkit Cover
  • Frequently Asked Questions (revised 10/14/2009) ... provides answers to some general questions you may have about offering a distance learning course. Please contact our office if you are interested in transitioning your traditional course into a distance learning format so that we may assist you in the process.
  • Development Fund Guidelines (revised 10/14/2009) ... outlines the criteria that must be met prior to receiving development funds for distance learning courses.
  • Course Development Sheet ... provides faculty with essential standards as a guideline to utilize during course development. These are based on the Quality Matters rubric from the University of Maryland which is developed on national research and standards. As you design your course, please refer to these recommended standards to ensure that your course will be a more effective teaching tool for your students.
  • Recommended Course Layout ... is a recommended design structure for faculty as you design your course. This enables a faculty member to begin the process of course development with a basic layout designed to include essential elements for any online/distance learning course. Feel free to use this as a starting point as you develop your course content.
  • Post-Development Survey ... is for you to fill out after you have developed your distance learning course. We'd like to hear how satisfied you were with our services so we can improve our services to you and other faculty.
If you prefer to fill out the survey online, you may do so here.
  • TASC Contacts ... lists the members of TASC and DLP who can assist you in your distance learning needs
  • Midterm Formative Survey ... provides you with a means to receive feedback from your students at mid-term that can be used to make minor changes in some aspects of your course for the remainder of the semester. Three files are included to help you create this survey within your Blackboard course shell:
