Established in 1986 by Dr. Roy Peterson of the Council on Postsecondary Education, the Minority College Awareness Program is administered by the Office for Institutional Diversity at UK and is comprised of several early intervention program components.  Through classes, individual attention, and social interaction, MCAP prepares African American and other under-represented students for success in post-secondary education.

MCAP works with 2nd and 3rd graders to improve reading skills - the single most important aspect of any education.  Later, the focus shifts to mathematics, with additional emphasis on African American history, science, language arts, computer sciences and communications.

All the way through grade 12, MCAP works with students to develop necessary skills and abilities, which build confidence and competence, inspiring pride and ambition.  Students involved with MCAP can participate in other educational components hosted by the University of Kentucky, R.A.P. (Realizing Academic Potential at Winburn Middle School) and YMCA Black Achievers Program.

MCAP is free to students in grades 2-12.  Through different segments of MCAP, students can participate in field trips, enhance social skills, character instruction, career guidance, and a number of other activities which are designed to stimulate interest in success through education.  This will enhance their Potential and Broaden horizons.

Parents are required to support their students through transportation and participation in parent workshops, seminars and other open house activities.  Their participation will add a positive element of encouragement which will insure greater success for the student.
