Watch this space after ETD 2004 to see award winner announcements!

The Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations is pleased to announce the debut of an awards program to acknowledge the creative and administrative efforts of those in the ETD community. This program has been established with financial support from Adobe Systems. Anyone-- faculty, students, administrators and librarians -- affiliated with an NDLTD member -- is eligible for consideration!

The awards recognize individuals who have made significant contribution to the worldwide ETD movement and students who have created exemplary ETDs that demonstrate the new dimensions of scholarship that can be explored through ETDs. Sponsors are also invited to contact NDLTD about becoming supporters of this exciting recognition program either this year or in the future.

In recognition of the community of people who support a successful ETD program, there are awards to honor the efforts of students and ETD program administrators. Nominations will be reviewed by a panel of ETD experts. Awards will be presented this June at ETD 2004: The Seventh International Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations, during the gala dinner hosted by Adobe Systems at the Kentucky Horse Park. Nominations are due by April 15 and details for each award and nomination process are listed below. Details about ETD 2004 are available at http://www.uky.edu/ETD/ETD2004/.

We invite all NDLTD members to nominate individuals they feel deserve the recognition!

  1. ETD Leadership Awards: This is open to members of the university community whose leadership and vision has helped raise awareness of the benefits of ETDs, and whose efforts have improved graduate education. Through the use of ETDs. Letters of nomination should include details about the individual's ETD related activities. There may be up to two winners each year. Each winner will receive $1000.
  2. Innovative ETD Award: ETDs submitted for this award must represent student efforts to transform the genre of the print dissertation through the use of ETDs. This award recognizes innovative use of software to create "cutting edge" ETDs. Use of renderings, photos and other multimedia objects that are included in the document will be considered as part of the innovation of the work. Each winner will receive $400.
    1. There will be up to three winners each year in the "PDF Format" category. Judges will consider documents in PDF format. The ETD must have been accepted for graduation in the calendar year 2003.
    2. There will be up to three winners each year in the "Open Format" category. Judges will consider documents not in PDF format. The ETD must have been accepted for graduation in the calendar year 2003.
  3. Innovative Learning through ETDs Award: A student whose life has been changed because of the ETD process (not to include the value of the degree earned) will be recognized. Students should write a short essay (500-1000 words) describing their ETD experience and how it improved/changed their graduate experience and their professional lives. The ETD may still be in the process of being completed. Self nomination is appropriate for this award. There may be up to 3 winners. Each winner will receive $200.

Nominations should be sent to Jude Edminster (Bowling Green State University) at jedmins@bgnet.bgsu.edu by April 15.
