Membership in the NDLTD

1. ANNOUNCING NDLTD DUES

Since its inception in 1996, the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD) has worked to improve graduate education, increase the availability of student research, empower students and universities, advance digital library technology, and lower the costs of submitting and handling electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs).

In order to better serve its membership, in May 2003 the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations was duly formed as a nonstock corporation for worldwide charitable and educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of the United States. The NDLTD Membership and Finance Committees proceeded to develop a sustainable plan for: support of the NDLTD mission, ongoing operations, and additional valuable services to its membership, which now numbers over 200.

Recently (2/20/2004) we were pleased to announce an annual awards program. We continue to receive requests for scholarships to the annual conferences, e.g., ETD 2004 in Kentucky (followed by ETD 2005 in Australia). More sites (now over 40) are joining the Union Catalog, which has over 60,000 records, in multiple languages. Working with Adobe, we have launched an aggressive campaign to dramatically increase awareness regarding ETDs, with a goal of doubling the NDLTD membership over the next several years. Efforts continue regarding software development and free distribution (to support local and regional digital libraries of ETDs), as well as support of standards that ensure interoperability. NDLTD is visible worldwide for its role in improving access to scholarly works, and represents the interests of its members in this regard - facilitating dialog around the globe.

These efforts require financial support. After careful deliberation by the NDLTD Committees and Board of Directors, a decision was reached to implement a dues structure.

All current members of NDLTD will continue as Affiliate Members, with no dues required. But we encourage all to become (full) Members, which involves payment of minimal dues, while affording important benefits as discussed below. The annual fees, starting for calendar year 2004, are given in part 3 of this announcement.

We cordially invite you to support ETD activities through Membership in this important network!
