The Lexington Minority and Women Contractor Training Program is in its second year. It is a 10-week program that covers topics ranging from estimating and bidding to subcontracting.
The classes will begin January 10, 2012.
The program teaches skills that will help minority and women-owned businesses and is sponsored by the Kentucky Small Business Development Center, Bluegrass Airport, Messer Construction Co., BEX Construction, the Fayette County Public Schools, and the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government. A new sponsor, the University of Kentucky Facilities Management, has also been added.
The program is coordinated by Marilyn Clark, the LFUCG's minority business enterprise liaison. Classes will be held from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays. To qualify, you must be a minority or woman-owned business with a 51 percent ownership in the construction or construction-related industry.
The Expo provides an opportunity for minority businesses to showcase their unique products and services to governmant procurement officers and corporate buyers.

The Expo was hely July 27, 2011.
The University of Kentucky hosted its first supplier diversity outreach on September 24, 2009 in the student Center Small Ballroom. Over 30 certified minority business owners from throughout Kentucky were welcomed by University Vice Presidents, Directors, Managers, Buyers and Project Managers. There was an exchange of information, including the University’s diversity policy and the procedures for becoming a supplier. The University partnered with the Kentucky Lottery and the Tri-State Minority Supplier Development Council (TSMSDC), a non-profit organization whose purpose is to link institutions with minority business owners. This event is one of an increasing number of outreach efforts by U.K. Facilities Management and collaborating departments to expand and diversify the University’s supplier base. More events are tentatively scheduled for next year.

The seventh annual Lexington-Bluegrass Area Minority Business Expo will be held on August 5 & 6 2009. The Expo will offer networking opportunities, informational seminars and impressive speakers.
The Kentucky Minority Business Council (KMBC) 25 th Anniversary Celebration Banquet was held at the Crowne Plaza Louisville Airport. The 2009 Business Opportunity Fair was held at the Kentucky Exposition Center & Fairgrounds. These events were held June 10 & 11, 2009. During these events KMBC officially changed their name to Tri-State Minority Supplier Development Council (TSMSDC). There were approximately 75 vendors , DBE’s looking to display their goods and services and major corporations looking for DBE’s desiring to do business with them, with booths at the Opportunity Fair and about 200 individuals registered for the events. There were many networking opportunities available and captured during the anniversary celebration and business opportunity fair. These events were sponsored by many local, regional and national corporate partners.
The Patient Care Facility Bid Pack 6 Pre-Bid Meeting was held on August 15, 2008. This event was coordinated by Enterprise Manufacturing and hosted by Turner Construction at the University of Kentucky. Local DBE firms were invited to provide networking opportunities to form partnerships to bridge the gap between current DBE’s and the stated project goal.
The Sixth Annual Lexington-Bluegrass Minority Business Expo was held July 29 – 30.
The event hosted hundreds of women and minority business people, offering networking opportunities, informational seminars and impressive speakers. This event provided an opportunity for minority businesses to display their unique products and services to government procurement officers and corporate buyers. Various breakout sessions addressed a variety of topics intended to help minority businesses. The exhibit hall included a variety of products and services available from minority-owned businesses. The Lexington-Bluegrass Minority Business Expo was proudly sponsored by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, the University of Kentucky, Commerce Lexington and Fifth-Third Bank.
The Turner School for Construction Management was held weekly from February 18, 2008-April 14, 2008. This event was a free program sponsored by the University of Kentucky and Frost Brown Todd. This program was held on UK’s campus and was designed to enhance the managerial, technical and administrative skills of DBE companies. The program also created opportunities for DBE companies to interact and network to create future potential partnerships.
