Ten little-known facts about planned giving

A planned gift can be a significant investment in the College of Education and the University of Kentucky. This type of giving is sometimes called “deferred giving” because it usually means a donor provides a gift through a will, an insurance policy, a charitable remainder trust, a pooled-income annuity, or other ways of contributing after the donor’s lifetime. These gifts can yield enormous educational benefits for generations to come. They can also provide a way to give a gift larger than one may have thought possible.

Many people do not know that these gifts can provide significant advantages for the donor during his or her lifetime, while still ensuring that beneficiary interests are protected. Ten little-known facts about planned giving are:

· You don’t have to be wealthy to benefit.

· You can benefit UK’s College of Education and retain the use of all your assets.

· You can increase current income with charitable trusts.

· You can avoid capital gains taxes on highly appreciated property.

· You can use a charitable trust as a retirement plan.

· You can use a charitable trust or gift annuity as an educational fund for children or grandchildren.

· You can use charitable trusts to manage assets for dependents.

· You can deduct 100 percent of premiums for charitable gifts or insurance.

· You can save estate taxes with charitable bequests and trusts.

· You can use charitable trusts to pass assets tax free to heirs.

For more information, please contact Mary Ann Vimont, director of development for the College of Education. She will be glad to provide specific information or suggestions on a confidential basis on how various planned giving options may fill individual needs. Many employers do match the gifts their employees donate to non-profit organizations—including universities. So, please check with your employer. If you are married, ask your spouse to inquire about the matching gift program at his or her place of employment. Gift matching is easy to do. Just stop by your personnel office and ask for the appropriate form. This will certainly help the college to further its goals, and it only takes a few extra minutes!
