Doctoral students receive awards


Congratulations to the following doctoral students in the College of Education who were recently honored with various regional and national awards.

Anita Bowman, doctoral student in kinesiology and health promotion, was the recipient of the 2000 Memorial Graduate Scholarship awarded by the Southeast Athletic Trainers Association. The scholarship award was presented to Bowman at the annual meeting of the association in Atlanta in March.

Tim Brindle, doctoral student in kinesiology and health promotion, received a grant award from the Southeast Athletic Trainers Association at its annual meeting in Atlanta in March. The grant will support his research to identify differences in temporal characteristics (EMG onset and duration) of firing patterns in leg musculature between subjects with generalized anterior knee pain and age-matched control subjects.

Carl J. Liaupsin, doctoral student in the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling, received the Carl Fenichel Memorial Research Award from the Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders (CCBD). The award recognizes students who are conducting quality research in the area of emotional and behavioral disorders in children and youth. The award was presented to Liaupsin on April 6 at the annual CCBD meeting in Vancouver. His dissertation research involves the evaluation of a software product, Functional Behavioral Assessment: An Interactive Tutorial.

Margaret Quintero, doctoral student in the Department of Administration and Supervision, was selected as one of 37 participants for the David L. Clark National Graduate Student Research Seminar held on April 28-29 at the conclusion of the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association in New Orleans.

Tom Welch, doctoral student in administration and supervision and principal at East Jessamine High School, and James Rinehart, chair of the Department of Administration and Supervision, received the Paula Silver Case Award from the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA) at its annual conference in Minneapolis in October 1999. The award was presented to Welch and Rinehart for their case “Consensus of the Council?” which was published in the UCEA Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership. The case was judged by a panel of editorial board members to be the best case published in the journal during the year.

Amy Wells, doctoral student in the Department of Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation, has been selected as a research grant recipient in a national competition sponsored by the Rockefeller Archive Center in New York. The grant will fund her research at the center this summer. Past recipients of the award include professors and Ph.D. candidates from institutions such as Princeton, New York University, Harvard, Oxford, Pennsylvania State University, and the University of California.
