Business/Marketing Education with Initial Teaching Certification
Option (5-12)
The
teacher certification program in business/marketing education for
high schools requires a bachelor's degree with a 2.5 GPA in any
major in business or related field with a business minor. Professional
work experience also contributes to an applicant's qualifications. The
GRE exam is required.

The
Faculty
DOUGLAS C. SMITH, Ph.D., Arizona State University
Dr. Douglas C.
Smith joined the faculty in 1987. His primary assignment is in our
Instructional Systems Design program where he teaches instructional
computing and electronic authoring. His research interests include
the roles of education technologists, gender equity, and computer
based instruction. Dr. Smith also
coordinates the business content core for the master's with initial
certification program.
ELINOR BROWN, Ph.D., University of Akron
Dr.
Elinor Brown holds an M.B.A. from Cleveland State University,
M.A. in multicultural education and M.S. in secondary education
from the University of Akron, and a B.B.A. from Cleveland State
University. She has taught undergraduate and graduate level courses
in teacher education, cultural diversity, and professional development
at Cleveland State University, John Carroll University, and the
University of Akron. Her research and academic interest include
cultural diversity pedagogy, teacher preparation, school/university/community
collaboration.
Admission
The following
prerequisites are needed for general admission into the MIC program.
- An undergraduate
degree in business or related field with a business minor. Although
each teaching specialty has its own unique requirements, students
typically have 48 to 66 credit hours in their academic teaching
specialties.
- Qualification
for admission to a UK College of Education teacher certification
program requires letters of recommendation, an interview by the
appropriate program faculty, GPAs of at least 2.5 overall, in
major, minor, and support areas, demonstrated basic skills (GRE,
PRAXIS I, SAT or ACTE), and a statement of moral/ethical background. MIC
applications are available from the teaching specialty academic
advisors.
- Admission to
the Graduate School, which requires a minimum of 2.75 undergraduate
GPA, 3.0 GPA in any graduate work, and standardized test scores. Graduate
School and departmental applications are available.
- 100 hours of
documented experience with 14-18 year old adolescents as well
as commmunity and cross-cultural experience.
- Students should
apply to the program by February 1 to study the following academic
year, but should talk to an advisor earlier.
