Welcome to the Social Studies Education Program at the University of Kentucky! We are particularly proud that you are interested learning more about this most challenging teaching experience. Students with whom you will be working mature, learn, and explore at different rates, seemingly in different directions during their Social Studies Experience. As a classroom teacher engaged in working with young people during this time in their life, you will make similar discoveries about better ways to teach, to manage a classroom, to help a child learn.

Professor Kathy Swan is the Chair of the Secondary Social Studies Education Program faculty.

Professor Linda Levstik provides leadership in Elementary Social Studies Education. Interested students need to apply to the Elementary Education program and will work with Professor Levstik.

Our Secondary Social Studies Education Program Faculty brings together educators from within the College of Education, faculty from the University community, the Professional Educators from the Bluegrass area, and advanced Secondary Social Studies education students.

Interested prospective undergraduate students are encouraged to apply to UK and indicate their strong interest in the Secondary Social Studies Education program. This undergraduate program does not lead to certification. Upon completion of the undergraduate program may apply to the MIC Secondary Social Studies Education degree progrm..

Applications to the MIC Secondary Social Studies Education program are considered once a year (shortly after the 1 February deadline) for the Summer and two-semester program in Secondary Secondary Social Education. You will note that you apply to UK Graduate School, to the Master's with Initial Certification Program, and to the Teacher Education Program.

MIC advising answers are availabe on-line.

Applications for masters, Rank II, Rank I and doctorate programs must be sent to the Graduate School, to the Director of Graduate Study, and to the Teacher Education Program.

Typically our students do very well on this measure of readiness to teach in the Secondary Social Studiess.

The Academic Services and Teacher Certification Office announces test dates and information on graduation deadlines.

The web page that shows the certification requirements across the country is frequently visited by people who are graduating.

Secondary Social Studies Alumni Our alumni teach in schools across the commonwealth and many of the 50 states.

Secondary Social Studies Educators are in great demand across the country; employment opportunities abound!

Secondary Social Studies Resources The Secondary Social Studies Program at UK also maintains a professional educators' resource center. In addition several LISTSERVs are directed toward the Secondary Social Studies Educator.
