Questions and Answers

Q: How do I become a student in the Department of Educational Leadership Studies?
A: You simply obtain a application packet from the department and complete the forms and supply the requested information. You may also go to our web-page and obtain the needed forms. Please note that you must apply to the Graduate School and to the Department of Educational Leadership Studies (see Instructions for Submitting Applications).

Q: Can I take classes and not be enrolled as a student in the Department of Educational Leadership Studies?
A: Yes, students often take classes from this department to apply to a certificate or degree program in another department. However, if you want certification or a degree, you should enroll as a student in the Department of Educational Leadership Studies. (See EDL programs)

Q: What are the differences between a certificate and a degree?
A: Basically, there is one distinct difference. A degree (Master's and Specialist) is awarded to a student by the University of Kentucky's Graduate School for completion of an advanced program and an exit exam. A certificate is awarded to a student by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board based on completion of an approved program and is a license to become a principal, supervisor, or superintendent. All of EDL's certificate programs are approved by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board.

Q: Can I get a certificate without a degree?
A:
In the past it was possible to earn a certificate without a degree; however, the department now enrolls all students in a Master's or Specialist Degree Program.

Q: Can I get a degree without a certificate?
A: Yes, it is possible to earn a degree without a certificate. The Department of Educational Leadership Studies offers three graduate-level degree programs, Masters in Education (M.Ed.), Education Specialist (Ed.S.), and Education Doctorate (Ed.D.). (See EDA Programs).

Q: How come I have a letter admitting me to the UK Graduate School, but I'm still not admitted to the Department of Educational Leadership Studies?
A: The admission process at UK is similar to being hired in a school district. First, the district office approves your qualifications (appropriate certificate, pass the finger printing check, etc.), and second, the principal and school council approve and recommend you for employment. In other words, you may have an appropriate certificate and pass the finger printing check and not be approved by the principal and school council. At UK, the Graduate School must first approve your qualifications (grade point averages and graduate record exams). The department then reviews your qualifications (GPA, GRE scores, references, and writing samples) and makes a decision about accepting you for admission to a program in the department. In summary, it is necessary for you to apply to both the Graduate School and the department in order to earn a degree and/or a certificate.

Q: Do I have to be in one of the cohort programs to earn a degree?
A: No, students may still take courses at their own pace for any of the degree or certification programs. A little over one-third of EDL's students are not members of a degree or certification cohort.
