UK College of Education Instructional Leadership:
supervisor preparation program

This program prepares individuals to become leaders that supervise instruction and curriculum, usually from district offices. Students who enroll in this program may complete the requirements within a Master’s or Specialist Degree. A majority of students complete principal certification and then take an additional two (2) or three (3) courses to complete supervisor preparation. Please see the course listing below that indicate the two additional courses that are needed (The Supervisor and Tests and Measurement). It may be that students need to take another one of the optional courses as well (see Level I options). Students who complete their principal preparation and then supervisor preparation are following a normal career path for most educational administrators.

Please note that all candidates for administrative preparation demonstrate their ability to meet the Interstate Leadership Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards in Kentucky. To that end, the faculty in the Department of Educational Leadership Studies aligned the curriculum for administrative preparation with those standards. The Kentucky Educational Professional Standards Board adopted these standards in November 1998 as criteria concerning knowledge, values, and performances that beginning administrators should be able to demonstrate.

Requirements for Admission

  1. Hold a valid Kentucky teaching certificate for any grade P-12
  2. Have successfully completed the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program (KTIP) or have two years successful teaching experience outside the state of Kentucky
  3. Have successfully completed three years full-time teaching experience
  4. Have successfully completed a master’s degree in education with a total cumulative grade point average of no less than 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  5. Have received a positive recommendation for admission from the UK Department of Educational Leadership Studies admissions review committee

Curriculum

Successful completion of the 33 credit hours required to obtain both the Level I and Level II certificate for Supervisor of Instruction also meets the 30 credit-hours-above-a-master’s-degree requirement for Rank 1 status in Kentucky. Furthermore, by taking an additional 3 to 6 credit hours of independent study under the supervision of three EDL faculty members, a student is also eligible for the Educational Specialist degree (Ed.S.), a nationally recognized academic degree. Thus, it is highly recommended that students seek admission to the Rank 1 and/or Educational Specialist programs at the same time that admission is sought to the Supervisor of Instruction certificate program.
