Introduction The essential
purpose of this webquest is to help you become familiar with one of the ethical
standards enforced by the American Psychological Association. What is an
ethical standard? Many professions enforce a code of ethics to ensure that
members of that profession responsibly resolve ethical conflicts. The code may
act as a promise to protect and promote the wellbeing of others. Thus, the code
may stress a dedication to moral principals and fundamental values. An ideal
code of ethics serves as a guide to both help the members of a profession
resolve ethical dilemmas and protect the public. Typically, however, a code of
ethics reflects and supports the current perspectives of a group of
professionals on how to make ethical decisions (Bersoff, 2003).
Learning the code of ethics of a
profession can help one learn about the responsibility they have to their
colleagues and to the social structure of their profession. For example,
present or future licensed psychologists are obligated to know and follow a
formal Ethics Code. A Committee on Scientific and Professional Ethics and
Conduct with the American Psychological Association (APA) developed this formal
Ethics Code. The most recent version of this code was adopted in 2002.
APA's Ethics Code directs professional, scientific, and academic
behaviors. Unethical behavior can develop through various exchanges between
psychologists and clients, research participants, or students. By using the
ethics code as a guide, a psychologist can identify ethical issues, prevent and
solve ethical dilemmas, communicate in a common language with colleagues, and
achieve their professional roles and responsibilities (Bersoff, 2003).
More specifically, the American
Psychological Association's Ethics Code includes an Introduction, a Preamble,
General Principles, and Ethical Standards. The Introduction provides a
description of the purpose, procedural issues, categorization, and
extensiveness of the application of the Ethics Code. To encourage psychologists
to fulfill the highest ideals of psychology, the Preamble and General
Principles were created. They act as aspirational goals. The final component,
the Ethical Standards, establish enforceable rules for psychologists (Bersoff,
2003). You will learn about one of these Ethical Standards: Education and
Training.

You each have gained new knowledge about the APA Ethical Standard: Education and Training. Now you will join the rest of the class and talk about what you have learned. As a class, you will all try to answer the Overall Task /Question. Each of you will offer a certain viewpoint to the answer. Use the information you collected to share your viewpoint and to convince your classmates that your perspective is valid and should be included in the answer to the Task/Question. Your class should write out the answer and this should be an answer that everyone in the class can agree on.
You and your classmates
have learned how to work individually and as a team to complete a difficult
task. Now you will write a letter to get feedback from an outside person. You
will write this letter as a class and you will include viewpoints, opinions,
and information from your previous discussion. Here are the steps to writing
the letter:
1. Start your letter with a statement about who you are and why you are writing
this letter.
2. Provide general background information to demonstrate your knowledge of the
topic.
RESTATE THE TASK / QUEST(ION) AND YOUR GROUP'S ANSWER.
3. Each person in your class should write a paragraph that provides both the
class's opinion and two reasons supporting the opinion. Be specific when
writing the information and the supporting reasons. Include the appropriate web
links for the information you decide to include.
