Nature of the Course

I. Description

EDP 708 is a four-semester professional course in the graduate curriculum of Counseling Psychology. The course will be taught by the Director of Counseling Psychology Training and will address issues related to seeking, obtaining, maintaining, and completing the counseling psychology internship. Included will be an examination of the search process, the selection of optimal sites for applications, the current APPIC guidelines, memoranda of understanding, mid-year and final internship reports.

The on-campus year for the course is preparation for the off-campus internship experience.Students enroll for three-credits each semester for the on-campus seminars and for zero-credit for the off-campus internship.
II. Learning Objectives
  1. To provide an overview of the doctoral internship process
  2. To promote the wise selection of internship sites
  3. To facilitate the assemblying of internship application packets
  4. To prepare for the interview experience
  5. To continue the clarification of site information based upon accumulated information
  6. To anticipate the rigors of the site, once selected
  7. To support applicants and interns throughout the process
III. Course Format EDP 708 is conducted as a seminar. Monthly sessions are scheduled with the anticipation that the students complete massive amounts of work in preparation for the seminar. Students are encourage to use as resources current interns, peers, faculty, the course LISTSERV, the web, and guest presenters.

IV. Assignments

The assignments are intended to match the expectations from the application, interview, placement and completion cycle.
  • Session ONE: Overview of the process based upon previous experience, current knowledge, and LISTSERV information. Complete the program information request, be aware of the program deadlines for defense, proposal defense. Discuss strategies for selecting potential internship sites. Ensure all applicants are subscribed to the appropriate APPIC LISTSERVs. Submit the "Pre-internship Proposal Verification" form.
  • Session TWO: Review the data gathering process for each participant, obtain the addresses, including DT's name and title for the final application list of 12-18 sites, discuss the advantages of site diversity (e.g., geography, learning experiences, and complexity), cue potential writers of letters of recommendation for deadlines.
  • Session THREE: Review application completion activities, review focus of applications, and progress on proposals or data collection. Guest speaker address the issues of successful applications, if needed.
  • Session FOUR: Review readiness for application submission. Decisions to modify focus of applications. Review status of proposal/ data collection. Discuss strategies for ranking sites. Guest speaker address interview experiences, including ethics.
  • Session FIVE: Outline program expectations for the Memorandum of Understanding, Internship Hours Data Record, and Internship Evaluation Form. These documents are provided the Program Director in a timely manner.
  • Session SIX: Debrief on the application and interview experiences. Discuss competing academic activities (e.g., proposal, IRB). Invite next year group of internship applicants to attend (second hour).
  • V. Evaluation

    Evaluation of progress will be determined by the following criteria:
  • Attendance and participation in on-campus experience (On campus)
  • Complete the application experience (On campus)
  • Enroll for zero credit for duration of the internship
  • Submit the Memorandum of Understanding on time (On-site)
  • Ensure Internship DT sneds mid-year evaluations to the Program DT(On-side)
  • Ensure Internship DT submits end of internship evaluation (On-site)
  • Provide final evaluation and final internship hours by last Friday in August (On-site)
  • The on-campus year long seminar is graded on a task completion or not basis. Students are encouraged to balance their internship application activities with the other influences upon their lives. Delaying an internship based upon good judgment is a better course of action, than unwisely overloading a schedule and creating an unsatisfactory outcome. The evaluatoin of the on-site course is predicated upon receipt of the final internship evaluation from the site.

    VII. Caveats

    Sites might ask for work samples. In the event, CPAC wants the documents to be reviewed by your major professor and by the Director of Training.
