EDP
caveat regarding financial aid to graduate students |
|
| The
faculty of EDP
want all applicants to know that financial aid in the form of scholarships,
assistantships, or fellowships is highly competitive at the University
of Kentucky. In order to provide as much financial support as possible
the faculty engage in winning research awards, which might provide research
assistantship opportunities. Further, the faculty networks within the
University and the region to find opportunities for graduate assistantships.
The Graduate School does have an annual cycle for selected
fellowships. Usually we are able to match new doctoral students to
teaching assistantships, research assistantships, or graduate assistantships.
Sometimes this matching takes an interview with the Principle Investigator.
We encourage new students to subscribe to their program
discussion list where assistantship and work opportunities are disseminated.
However, you need to know the realities. The Department does have six teaching assistantships, four require K-12 teaching experience. The other two assistantships require that the student be able to carry out necessary obligations. Each of the six assistantships offer additional fellowships which provide support equal to the out of state portion of the current tuition, if needed. Further the teaching assistantships offer a second fellowship which provides support equal to the in-state portion of the current tuition, if needed. Other research and graduate assistantships are available within the University Community and are typically derived from soft monies, which means they are announced from time-to-time throughout the academic year. Full and half-time research assistantships generally offer tuition fellowships. Further, no funds are available to support international students. The Graduate School suggests that you contact the US Embassy about grants, e.g., Fulbright, Rotary or other programs. The Department has no funds to support international students. Indeed, international applicants to our programs from outside the US must demonstrate to The Graduate School that you have funds to cover your expenses for a year. While the foregoing might be bleak, EDP wants you to be aware of the funding opportunities.
